Systemic Effects of Inflammation on Health during Chronic HIV Infection
TLDR
It is likely that knowledge gained on how inflammation affects health in HIV disease could have implications for the understanding of other chronic inflammatory diseases and the biology of aging.About:

Cross-sectional comparison of the prevalence of age-associated comorbidities and their risk factors between HIV-infected and uninfected individuals: the AGEhIV Cohort Study
Judith Schouten,Ferdinand W. N. M. Wit,Ineke G. Stolte,Neeltje A. Kootstra,Marc van der Valk,Suzanne E. Geerlings,Maria Prins,Peter Reiss +7 more
TL;DR: All AANCCs were numerically more prevalent, with peripheral arterial, cardiovascular disease, and impaired renal function significantly so, among HIV-infected participants compared with HIV-uninfected controls.
Journal ArticleDOI
HIV-infected individuals with low CD4/CD8 ratio despite effective antiretroviral therapy exhibit altered T cell subsets, heightened CD8+ T cell activation, and increased risk of non-AIDS morbidity and mortality.

TL;DR: A persistently low CD4/CD8 ratio during otherwise effective ART is associated with increased innate and adaptive immune activation, an immunosenescent phenotype, and higher risk of morbidity/mortality.

The effects of acute psychological stress on circulating and stimulated inflammatory markers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
TL;DR: Findings from a prior meta-analysis are extended to show reliable increases in circulating IL-6, IL-1β, Il-10 and TNF-α and stimulated IL- 1β,IL-4 and interferon-γ in response to acute stress, suggesting that these responses contribute to associations between exposure to life challenges and vulnerability to inflammatory disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammation, ageing and chronic disease
TL;DR: The purpose of this article is to review recent literature from the past two years providing new data on the inter-relationships between inflammatory status and chronic diseases of ageing.

Zonulin, a regulator of epithelial and endothelial barrier functions, and its involvement in chronic inflammatory diseases
Craig Sturgeon,Alessio Fasano +1 more
TL;DR: This review focuses on the recent research implicating zonulin as a master regulator of intestinal permeability linked to the development of several chronic inflammatory disorders.

The Hallmarks of Aging
TL;DR: Nine tentative hallmarks that represent common denominators of aging in different organisms are enumerated, with special emphasis on mammalian aging, to identify pharmaceutical targets to improve human health during aging, with minimal side effects.

Frailty in elderly people
TL;DR: Developing more efficient methods to detect frailty and measure its severity in routine clinical practice would greatly inform the appropriate selection of elderly people for invasive procedures or drug treatments and would be the basis for a shift in the care of frail elderly people towards more appropriate goal-directed care.

How cells respond to interferons
TL;DR: The Janus kinases and signal transducers and activators of transcription, and many of the interferon-induced proteins, play important alternative roles in cells, raising interesting questions as to how the responses to the interFERons intersect with more general aspects of cellular physiology and how the specificity of cytokine responses is maintained.

Intestinal microbiota metabolism of L-carnitine, a nutrient in red meat, promotes atherosclerosis
Robert A. Koeth,Zeneng Wang,Bruce S. Levison,Jennifer A. Buffa,Elin Org,Brendan Sheehy,Earl B. Britt,Xiaoming Fu,Yuping Wu,Lin Li,Jonathan D. Smith,Joseph A. DiDonato,Jun Chen,Hongzhe Li,Gary D. Wu,James D. Lewis,Manya Warrier,J. Mark Brown,Ronald M. Krauss,W.H. Wilson Tang,Frederic D. Bushman,Aldons J. Lusis,Stanley L. Hazen +22 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that metabolism by intestinal microbiota of dietary l-carnitine, a trimethylamine abundant in red meat, also produces TMAO and accelerates atherosclerosis in mice, and intestinal microbiota may contribute to the well-established link between high levels of red meat consumption and CVD risk.
