TL;DR: It is suggested that the expansion of this highly dysfunctional CD56(-)/CD16(+) (CD56(-)) NK cell subset in HIV-viremic individuals largely accounts for the impaired function of the total NK cell population.

TL;DR: An expansion of the functionally defective CD56-/CD16+ population of NK cells in viremic versus aviremic patients is demonstrated and functional tests confirmed that the abnormal expression of the activating receptors and of iNKRs was associated with a markedly impaired NK cytolytic function.
