TL;DR: Given that the majority of the biological and human health variables remained stable, or returned to baseline, after a 340-day space mission, these data suggest that human health can be mostly sustained over this duration of spaceflight.
Journal ArticleDOI
Geospatial Resolution of Human and Bacterial Diversity with City-Scale Metagenomics
Ebrahim Afshinnekoo,Ebrahim Afshinnekoo,Cem Meydan,Shanin Chowdhury,Shanin Chowdhury,Dyala Jaroudi,Collin Boyer,Nick Bernstein,Julia M. TL;DR: This baseline metagenomic map of NYC could help long-term disease surveillance, bioterrorism threat mitigation, and health management in the built environment of cities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comprehensive benchmarking and ensemble approaches for metagenomic classifiers.

TL;DR: It is shown that proper experimental design and analysis parameters can reduce false positives, provide greater resolution of species in complex metagenomic samples, and improve the interpretation of results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large-scale differences in microbial biodiversity discovery between 16S amplicon and shotgun sequencing.
Michael Tessler,Johannes S. Neumann,Ebrahim Afshinnekoo,Ebrahim Afshinnekoo,Michael Pineda,Rebecca Hersch,Luiz Felipe Machado Velho,Bianca Trevizan Segovia,Fábio Amodêo Lansac-Tôha,Michael J. Lemke,Rob DeSalle,Christopher E. Mason,Mercer R. Brugler,Mercer R. Brugler +13 more
TL;DR: This work compares two next-generation sequencing techniques – amplicon and shotgun – on water samples across four of Brazil’s major river floodplain systems, challenging the dogma that mid-depth shotgun recovers more diversity than amplicon-based approaches.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fundamental Biological Features of Spaceflight: Advancing the Field to Enable Deep-Space Exploration.

TL;DR: The known hazards of human spaceflight are reviewed, how spaceflight affects living systems through these six fundamental features, and the associated health risks of space exploration are discussed.
