Supernova SN 2011fe from an exploding carbon–oxygen white dwarf star
Peter Nugent,Peter Nugent,Mark Sullivan,S. Bradley Cenko,R. C. Thomas,Daniel Kasen,Daniel Kasen,D. Andrew Howell,D. Andrew Howell,D. Bersier,Joshua S. Bloom,Shrinivas R. Kulkarni,M. T. Kandrashoff,Alexei V. Filippenko,Jeffrey M. Silverman,Geoffrey W. Marcy,Andrew W. Howard,Howard Isaacson,Kate Maguire,Nao Suzuki,J. E. Tarlton,Yen-Chen Pan,Lars Bildsten,Benjamin J. Ofek,Avishay Gal-Yam,Dovi Poznanski,Dovi Poznanski,Dovi Poznanski +50 more
TL;DR: Early observations of type Ia supernova SN 2011fe in the galaxy M101 at a distance from Earth of 6.4 megaparsecs find that the exploding star was probably a carbon–oxygen white dwarf, and from the lack of an early shock it is concluded that the companion was likely a main-sequence star.
Journal ArticleDOI
The type Ia supernova SNLS-03D3bb from a super-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf star
D. Andrew Howell,Mark Sullivan,Peter Nugent,Richard S. Ellis,Alex Conley,Damien Le Borgne,Raymond G. Carlberg,Julien Guy,David D. Balam,Stéphane Basa,D. Fouchez,Isobel Hook,Eric Hsiao,James D. Neill,Reynald Pain,K. Perrett,Christopher J. Pritchet +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the high-redshift supernova SNLS-03D3bb has an exceptionally high luminosity and low kinetic energy that both imply a super-Chandrasekhar-mass progenitor, which may provide an explanation for the observed trend that overluminous type Ia supernovae occur only in ‘young’ environments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Supernova 2007bi as a pair-instability explosion.
Avishay Gal-Yam,Paolo A. Mazzali,Eran O. Ofek,Peter Nugent,Shrinivas R. Kulkarni,Mansi M. Kasliwal,R. M. Quimby,Alexei V. Filippenko,S. B. Cenko,Ryan Chornock,Roni Waldman,Daniel Kasen,Mark Sullivan,E. C. Beshore,Andrew J. Drake,R. C. Thomas,Joshua S. Bloom,Dovi Poznanski,Adam A. Miller,Ryan J. Foley,J. M. Silverman,Iair Arcavi,Richard S. Ellis,J. Deng +23 more
TL;DR: Observations of supernova SN 2007bi are reported, a luminous, slowly evolving object located within a dwarf galaxy, and it is shown that >3 of radioactive 56Ni was synthesized during the explosion and that the observations are well fitted by models of pair-instability supernovae.

TL;DR: The DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (http://legacysurvey.org/) as mentioned in this paper is a combination of three public projects (the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey, the Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey, and the Mayall z-band Legacy Survey) that will jointly image ≈14,000 deg2 of the extragalactic sky visible from the northern hemisphere in three optical bands (g, r, and z) using telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory.
