Abstract: We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from non-flow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=2.76$ TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic, $v_2$, and quadrangular, $v_4$, flow harmonics, as well as of anti-correlation between $v_2$ and triangular, $v_3$, flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry-dominated (in mid-central collisions) and fluctuation-dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from MC-Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, AMPT and HIJING models. Together with the existing measurements of individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract: A novel scan trajectory for high-speed scanning probe microscopy is presented in which the probe follows a two-dimensional Lissajous pattern The Lissajous pattern is generated by actuating the scanner with two single-tone harmonic waveforms of constant frequency and amplitude Owing to the extremely narrow frequency spectrum, high imaging speeds can be achieved without exciting the unwanted resonant modes of the scanner and without increasing the sensitivity of the feedback loop to the measurement noise The trajectory also enables rapid multiresolution imaging, providing a preview of the scanned area in a fraction of the overall scan time We present a procedure for tuning the spatial and the temporal resolution of Lissajous trajectories and show experimental results obtained on a custom-built atomic force microscope (AFM) Real-time AFM imaging with a frame rate of 1 frame s⁻¹ is demonstrated

Abstract: In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the interplay between Gal3p, Gal80p and Gal4p determines the transcriptional status of the genes needed for galactose utilization. The interaction between Gal80p and Gal4p has been studied in great detail; however, our understanding of the mechanism of Gal3p in transducing the signal from galactose to Gal4p has only begun to emerge recently. Historically, Gal3p was believed to be an enzyme (catalytic model) that converts galactose to an inducer or co-inducer, which was thought to interact with GAL80p, the repressor of the system. However, recent genetic analyses indicate an alternative ‘protein–protein interaction model’. According to this model, Gal3p is activated by galactose, which leads to its interaction with Gal80p. Biochemical and genetic experiments that support this model provided new insights into how Gal3p interacts with the Gal80p–Gal4p complex, alleviates the repression of Gal80p and thus allows Gal4p to activate transcription. Recently, a galactose-independent signal was suggested to co-ordinate the induction of GAL genes with the energy status of the cell.
