Curcumin―The Paradigm of a Multi-Target Natural Compound with Applications in Cancer Prevention and Treatment

Abstract: As cancer is a multifactor disease, it may require treatment with compounds able to target multiple intracellular components. We summarize here how curcumin is able to modulate many components of intracellular signaling pathways implicated in inflammation, cell proliferation and invasion and to induce genetic modulations eventually leading to tumor cell death. Clinical applications of this natural compound were initially limited by its low solubility and bioavailability in both plasma and tissues but combination with adjuvant and delivery vehicles was reported to largely improve bio-availability of curcumin. Moreover, curcumin was reported to act in synergism with several natural compounds or synthetic agents commonly used in chemotherapy. Based on this, curcumin could thus be considered as a good candidate for cancer prevention and treatment when used alone or in combination with other conventional treatments.

Precoding in Multibeam Satellite Communications: Present and Future Challenges

Abstract: Whenever multibeam satellite systems target very aggressive frequency reuse in their coverage area, inter-beam interference becomes the major obstacle for increasing the overall system throughput. As a matter of fact, users located at the beam edges suffer from very large interference for even a moderately aggressive planning of reuse-2. Although solutions for inter-beam interference management have been investigated at the satellite terminal, it turns out that the performance improvement does not justify the increased terminal complexity and cost. In this article, we pay attention to interference mitigation techniques that take place at the transmitter (i.e., the gateway). Based on this understanding, we provide our vision on advanced precoding techniques and user clustering methods for multibeam broadband fixed satellite communications. We also discuss practical challenges to deploy precoding schemes and the support introduced in the recently published DVB-S2X standard. Future challenges for novel configurations employing precoding are also provided.

Psychometrische Evaluation der deutschen Barratt Impulsiveness Scale – Kurzversion (BIS-15)

Abstract: Zusammenfassung. Impulsivitat ist ein Personlichkeitsmerkmal, das mit schnellen, unuberlegten Handlungen ohne Beachtung moglicher negativer Konsequenzen einhergeht. Eines der am weitesten verbreiteten Verfahren zur Erfassung von Impulsivitat ist die Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11; Patton, Stanford & Barratt, 1995). Es wurde gezeigt, dass die drei Faktoren nicht-planende, motorische und aufmerksamkeitsbasierte Impulsivitat auch ausreichend gut mit einer verkurzten Form der BIS-11 erfasst werden konnen (BIS-15; Spinella, 2007). Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt diese Kurzversion der BIS-11 in einer deutschen Ubersetzung vor. Reliabilitat und Faktorstruktur des Fragebogens wurden in einer Stichprobe (N = 752) von uberwiegend Studierenden getestet. Die dreifaktorielle Struktur von Spinella (2007) konnte bestatigt werden. Die interne Konsistenz war gut (Cronbachs α = .81). In einer zweiten Studie (N = 51) zeigte sich konvergente Validitat durch Zusammenhange mit einem anderen Impulsivitatsmas (UPPS). Die BIS-...
