Abstract: This paper presents an investigation into the utility of document summarisation in the context of information retrieval, more specifically in the application of so called query biased (or user directed) summaries: summaries customised to reflect the information need expressed in a query. Employed in the retrieved document list displayed after a retrieval took place, the summaries' utility was evaluated in a task-based environment by measuring users' speed and accuracy in identifying relevant documents. This was compared to the performance achieved when users were presented with the more typical output of an IR system: a static predefined summary composed of the title and first few sentences of retrieved documents. The results from the evaluation indicate that the use of query biased summaries significantly improves both the accuracy and speed of user relevance judgements.

Abstract: Proteins mediate transmission of signals along intercellular and intracellular pathways and between the exterior and the interior of a cell. The dynamic properties of signaling proteins are crucial to their functions. We discuss emerging paradigms for the role of protein dynamics in signaling. A central tenet is that proteins fluctuate among many states on evolutionarily selected energy landscapes. Upstream signals remodel this landscape, causing signaling proteins to transmit information to downstream partners. New methods provide insight into the dynamic properties of signaling proteins at the atomic scale. The next stages in the signaling hierarchy-how multiple signals are integrated and how cellular signaling pathways are organized in space and time-present exciting challenges for the future, requiring bold multidisciplinary approaches.

Abstract: Many mutations disappear from the population because they impair protein function and/or stability. Thus, amino acid positions that are essential for proper function evolve more slowly than others, or in other words, the slow evolutionary rate of a position reflects its importance. Con- Surf (http://consurf.tau.ac.il), reviewed in this manuscript, exploits this to reveal key amino acid positions that are im- portant for maintaining the native conformation(s) of the protein and its function, be it binding, catalysis, transport, etc. Given the sequence or 3D structure of the query protein as input, a search for similar sequences is conducted and the sequences are aligned. The multiple sequence alignment is subsequently used to calculate the evolutionary rates of each amino acid site, using Bayesian or maximum-likelihood algorithms. Both algorithms take into account the evolution- ary relationships between the sequences, reflected in phylo- genetic trees, to alleviate problems due to uneven (biased) sampling in sequence space. This is particularly important when the number of sequences is low. The ConSurf-DB, a new release of which is presented here, provides precalcu- lated ConSurf conservation analysis of nearly all available structures in the Protein DataBank (PDB). The usefulness of ConSurf for the study of individual proteins and mutations, as well as a range of large-scale, genome-wide applications, is reviewed.

Abstract: It has been recognized that the link between information technology (IT) investment and firm performance is indirect due to the effect of mediating and moderating variables. For example, in the banking industry, the IT-value added activity helps to effectively generate funds from the customer in the forms of deposits. Profits then are generated by using deposits as a source of investment funds. Traditional efficiency models, such as data envelopment analysis (DEA), can only measure the efficiency of one specific stage when a two-stage production process is present. We develop an efficiency model that identifies the efficient frontier of a two-stage production process linked by intermediate measures. A set of firms in the banking industry is used to illustrate how the new model can be utilized to (i) characterize the indirect impact of IT on firm performance, (ii) identify the efficient frontier of two principal value-added stages related to IT investment and profit generation, and (iii) highlight those firms that can be further analyzed for best practice benchmarking.

Abstract: Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have become one of the key digital circuit implementation media over the last decade. A crucial part of their creation lies in their architecture, which governs the nature of their programmable logic functionality and their programmable interconnect. FPGA architecture has a dramatic effect on the quality of the final device's speed performance, area efficiency, and power consumption. This survey reviews the historical development of programmable logic devices, the fundamental programming technologies that the programmability is built on, and then describes the basic understandings gleaned from research on architectures. We include a survey of the key elements of modern commercial FPGA architecture, and look toward future trends in the field.
