TLDR
A multifaceted and linked global strategy is needed to ensure sustainable and equitable food security, different components of which are explored here.Abstract:
Continuing population and consumption growth will mean that the global demand for food will increase for at least another 40 years. Growing competition for land, water, and energy, in addition to the overexploitation of fisheries, will affect our ability to produce food, as will the urgent requirement to reduce the impact of the food system on the environment. The effects of climate change are a further threat. But the world can produce more food and can ensure that it is used more efficiently and equitably. A multifaceted and linked global strategy is needed to ensure sustainable and equitable food security, different components of which are explored here.read more

Vertical farming: Skyscraper sustainability?
TL;DR: In this paper, the feasibility and plausibility of the vertical farming concept from a socio technical, mixed methods, research perspective is examined, and the findings indicate that vertical farming is a tool that can be used to supply food to cities in a sustainable manner, but this depends on the location and design.

Effect of Climate Change on the Yield of Cereal Crops: A Review
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the growth requirements and greenhouse gas release potential of staple cereal crops and assess the impact of climate change on their yields, and discuss potential solutions for minimizing the influence of global warming on crop productivity.

Linkages between soybean and neotropical deforestation: Coupling and transient decoupling dynamics in a multi-decadal analysis
TL;DR: Gasparri, Nestor Ignacio as discussed by the authors, and Gasparri et al. as discussed by the authors presented a study on the use of natural gas in the context of the research at the Universidad Nacional de Tucuman.

Tailored flower strips promote natural enemy biodiversity and pest control in potato crops
Matthias Tschumi,Matthias Albrecht,Jana Collatz,Viktor Dubsky,Martin H. Entling,Adriana J. Najar-Rodriguez,Katja Jacot +6 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that tailored flower strips can be an effective agri-environmental measure to enhance natural enemies and aphid control in nearby crops and may help to reduce insecticide input in potato production as they significantly decrease the probability that action thresholds are reached.

A Wheat CCAAT Box-Binding Transcription Factor Increases the Grain Yield of Wheat with Less Fertilizer Input
Baoyuan Qu,Xue He,Jing Wang,Yan-Yan Zhao,Wan Teng,An Shao,Xueqiang Zhao,Ma Wenying,Jun-Yi Wang,Bin Li,Zhensheng Li,Yiping Tong +11 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that TaNFYA-B1 plays essential roles in root development and in nitrogen and phosphorus usage in wheat, and provides new knowledge and valuable gene resources that should be useful in efforts to breed crops targeting high yield with less fertilizer input.

Land Clearing and the Biofuel Carbon Debt
TL;DR: Converting rainforests, peatlands, savannas, or grasslands to produce food crop–based biofuels in Brazil, Southeast Asia, and the United States creates a “biofuel carbon debt” by releasing 17 to 420 times more CO2 than the annual greenhouse gas reductions that these biofuel reductions would provide by displacing fossil fuels.
The state of food insecurity in the world 2011: how does international price volatility affect domestic economies and food security?
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors highlight the differential impacts that the world food crisis of 2006-2008 had on different countries, with the poorest being most affected, and present policy options to reduce volatility in a cost-effective manner and to manage it when it cannot be avoided.

TL;DR: Should past dependences of the global environmental impacts of agriculture on human population and consumption continue, 109 hectares of natural ecosystems would be converted to agriculture by 2050, accompanied by 2.4- to 2.7-fold increases in nitrogen- and phosphorus-driven eutrophication of terrestrial, freshwater, and near-shore marine ecosystems.
