TLDR
A multifaceted and linked global strategy is needed to ensure sustainable and equitable food security, different components of which are explored here.Abstract:
Continuing population and consumption growth will mean that the global demand for food will increase for at least another 40 years. Growing competition for land, water, and energy, in addition to the overexploitation of fisheries, will affect our ability to produce food, as will the urgent requirement to reduce the impact of the food system on the environment. The effects of climate change are a further threat. But the world can produce more food and can ensure that it is used more efficiently and equitably. A multifaceted and linked global strategy is needed to ensure sustainable and equitable food security, different components of which are explored here.read more

Resetting global expectations from agricultural biofuels
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a new biofuel yield analysis based on the best available global agricultural census data, which gives the first opportunity to consider geographically-specific patterns of biofuel feedstock production in different regions, across global, continental, national and sub-national scales.

Carrying capacity of U.S. agricultural land: Ten diet scenarios
Christian J. Peters,Jamie Picardy,Amelia Darrouzet-Nardi,Jennifer L. Wilkins,Timothy S. Griffin,Gary W. Fick +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a biophysical simulation model to calculate human carrying capacity under ten diet scenarios, including two reference diets based on actual consumption and eight healthy omnivore diet scenarios that varied in the level of meat content.

Application of vaccines and dietary supplements in aquaculture: possibilities and challenges
TL;DR: The development of vaccines has proven essential for the development of a successful finfish aquaculture industry by preventing the occurrence of diseases like furunculosis and vibriosis in industrialised finfish farming.

Deep Learning: Individual Maize Segmentation From Terrestrial Lidar Data Using Faster R-CNN and Regional Growth Algorithms.
Shichao Jin,Yanjun Su,Shang Gao,Fangfang Wu,Tianyu Hu,Jin Liu,Wenkai Li,Dingchang Wang,Shaojiang Chen,Yuanxi Jiang,Yuanxi Jiang,Shuxin Pang,Qinghua Guo +12 more
TL;DR: The results showed that the method combing deep leaning and regional growth algorithms was promising in individual maize segmentation, and the values of r, p, and F of the three testing sites with different planting density were all over 0.9.

Improving yield potential in crops under elevated CO2: Integrating the photosynthetic and nitrogen utilization efficiencies
Surya Kant,Saman Seneweera,Joakim Rodin,Michael Materne,David Burch,Steven J. Rothstein,German Spangenberg +6 more
TL;DR: Potential causes for the stagnation in yield increases under elevated CO2 levels are discussed and possibilities to overcome this limitation by improved photosynthetic capacity and enhanced nitrogen use efficiency are explored.

Land Clearing and the Biofuel Carbon Debt
TL;DR: Converting rainforests, peatlands, savannas, or grasslands to produce food crop–based biofuels in Brazil, Southeast Asia, and the United States creates a “biofuel carbon debt” by releasing 17 to 420 times more CO2 than the annual greenhouse gas reductions that these biofuel reductions would provide by displacing fossil fuels.
The state of food insecurity in the world 2011: how does international price volatility affect domestic economies and food security?
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors highlight the differential impacts that the world food crisis of 2006-2008 had on different countries, with the poorest being most affected, and present policy options to reduce volatility in a cost-effective manner and to manage it when it cannot be avoided.

TL;DR: Should past dependences of the global environmental impacts of agriculture on human population and consumption continue, 109 hectares of natural ecosystems would be converted to agriculture by 2050, accompanied by 2.4- to 2.7-fold increases in nitrogen- and phosphorus-driven eutrophication of terrestrial, freshwater, and near-shore marine ecosystems.
