The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Effect of rib orientation on thermal and fluid-flow features in a two-pass parallelogram channel with abrupt entrance
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared different rib orientations in a two-pass parallelogram channel with an asymmetrically and suddenly contracted inlet condition, and found that the effect of rib orientation and inlet conditions extends to the whole channel rather than the first passage only.

Moisture-dependent morphing tunes the dispersal of dandelion diaspores
Madeleine Seale,Oleksandr Zhdanov,Cathal Cummins,Erika Kroll,Michael R. Blatt,Hossein Zare-Behtash,Angela Busse,Enrico Mastropaolo,Ignazio Maria Viola,Naomi Nakayama +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a dynamic mechanism by which dandelion seeds can regulate their dispersal in response to environmental conditions is presented, where the shape of the pappus when wet is observed.

Transient Permeabilization of Living Cells: Combining Shear Flow and Acoustofluidic Trapping for the Facilitated Uptake of Molecules
Andrej Kamenac,Felix L. Schilberth,Ernst Wagner,Achim Wixforth,Ulrich Lächelt,Christoph Westerhausen +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a novel approach for the transient permeabilization of cells was presented, which combined laminar shear flow in a microchannel with chaotic advection employing surface acoustic waves.

Local flow structure and turbulence quantities inside a heated rectangular riser in turbulent forced and mixed convection heat transfers
TL;DR: In this article, a visualization experiment was carried out to obtain the local flow structure and turbulence quantities in turbulent forced and mixed convection heat transfers inside a very high temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor.

TL;DR: In this article, a low-cost flow visualization technique using time-lapsed imagery (TLI) that allows real-time analysis of slope movement is presented, applied to the Rest and Be Thankful slope, Argyle, Scotland, where past debris flows have blocked the A83 or forced preemptive closure.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
