The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Particle-covered drops in electric fields: drop deformation and surface particle organization
Alexander Mikkelsen,Khobaib Khobaib,Fredrik Kvalheim Eriksen,Knut Jørgen Måløy,Zbigniew Rozynek +4 more
TL;DR: This work utilized electric fields to experimentally investigate the mechanics of particle-covered silicone oil drops suspended in castor oil, as well as particle assembly at drop surfaces, and presents a novel method for controlling the local particle coverage and packing of particles on drop surfaces by simply tuning the frequency of the applied electric field.

Acoustic bubble-based bidirectional micropump
TL;DR: In this article, an efficient bi-directional micropump using microcavity-trapped acoustic bubbles is studied, where a controllable microstreaming net flow is generated inside a microchannel by the oscillating bubbles.

Control of solutal Marangoni-driven vortical flows and enhancement of mixing efficiency.
TL;DR: It is shown that in addition to the surface tension of the volatile liquid, the vapor concentration also influenced the local surface tension along the interface, which in turn changed the internal flow velocity, and will motivate low-cost and portable sample flow control and mixing systems in the near future.

Size-dependent patterns of cell proliferation and migration in freely-expanding epithelia
Matthew A. Heinrich,Ricard Alert,Julienne LaChance,Tom J. Zajdel,Andrej Kosmrlj,Daniel J. Cohen +5 more
TL;DR: It is found that, while expanding with an edge speed independent of initial conditions, millimeter-scale epithelial monolayers exhibit internal patterns of proliferation and migration that depend not on the current but on the initial tissue size, indicating memory effects.

Quantifying Effusion Rates at Active Volcanoes through Integrated Time-Lapse Laser Scanning and Photography
TL;DR: The results support the use of integrated TLS and time-lapse photography for ground-truthing space-based measurements and highlight the value of interactive image analysis when automated approaches, such as particle image velocimetry (PIV), fail.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
