The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

On the Estimation of the Surface Elevation of Regular and Irregular Waves Using the Velocity Field of Bubbles
TL;DR: In this paper, a set of experiments focused on estimating time series of the free surface elevation of water (FSEW) from velocities recorded by submerged air bubbles under regular and irregular waves using a low-cost nonintrusive technique.

Characterization of the local hydromechanical stress through experimental and numerical analysis of hydrodynamics under dark fermentation operating conditions
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the local hydrodynamic conditions encountered by bacterial aggregates in a fully baffled 2-L bioreactor equipped with a double stage Rusthton turbine in which dark fermentation had already been extensively studied.

Visualizing the effect of excavation rate on rock deformation and fracturing of tunnels using a transparent soft rock surrogate
TL;DR: In this article, a synthetic soft rock was made using consolidated fused quartz saturated with a blend of two mineral oils that have the same refractive index as the quartz and two tunneling methods representing machining and blasting were considered.

Experimental study of rough spherical Couette flows: Increasing helicity toward a dynamo state
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of different baffle designs in a 40 cm water experiment was investigated and one of them was used to increase the helicity of the inner sphere boundary of a spherical couette flow.

Asymptotic turbulent friction in 2D rough-walled flows
Alexandre Vilquin,Julie Jagielka,Simeon Djambov,Hugo Herouard,Patrick Fischer,Charles-Henri Bruneau,Pinaki Chakraborty,Gustavo Gioia,Hamid Kellay +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that for soap film flows that are the two-dimensional equivalent of highly turbulent rough-walled pipe flows, friction f depends solely on the roughness length scale r, and the f − r relation may be expressed by the Strickler empirical scaling f ∝ r 1/3.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
