The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

An experimental study on aquatic collapses of bidisperse granular deposits
Kang He,Huabin Shi,Xiping Yu +2 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of the ambient fluid, the particle composition, and the initial geometry on the dynamics of bidisperse granular columns are investigated, and it is shown that particle segregation contributes to an increased mobility of the column, probably due to the fact that smaller particles fall downward through the gaps between larger particles as the mixture deforms continuously.

Marangoni instability triggered by selective evaporation of a binary liquid inside a Hele-Shaw cell
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study the evaporation of an ethanol-water solution, for which ethanol is more volatile than water, and find a critical Marangoni number below which a regime of stability is predicted.

Energy dissipation within the wave run-up at stepped revetments
TL;DR: In this article, hydraulic model tests with steady flow conditions were conducted and correlated with unsteady flow conditions of the wave run-up within a short time frame, showing that the runup reduction over a stepped revetment is dependent on the Iribarren number.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry

TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
