The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Cell cycle regulation of ER membrane biogenesis protects against chromosome missegregation.
Holly Merta,Jake W. Carrasquillo Rodriguez,Maya I. Anjur-Dietrich,Tevis Vitale,Mitchell E. Granade,Thurl E. Harris,Daniel J. Needleman,Shirin Bahmanyar +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that accurate chromosome segregation in human cells requires cell cycle-regulated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane production, which increases the viscosity of the mitotic cytoplasm to physically restrict chromosome movements.

Influence of a wall on the three-dimensional dynamics of a vortex pair
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the vortex dynamics of a descending vortex pair, which is unstable to a long-wave instability (Crow, AIAA,J., vol. 8, 12), as it interacts with a horizontal ground plane.

TL;DR: An inducible cellular model of Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome in HeLa cells is introduced in which increased progerin expression leads to alterations in the coupling of the lamin shell with cytoskeletal or chromatin tethers as well as with polycomb group proteins.

Continuous online-monitoring of Ice Nucleating Particles: development of the automated Horizontal Ice Nucleation Chamber (HINC-Auto)
Cyril Brunner,Zamin A. Kanji +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a fully automated online INP counter, HINC-Auto, by adapting an existing custom-built instrument, the Horizontal Ice Nucleation Chamber, which was able to autonomously sample INPs in the immersion mode at a temperature of 243 k and a water saturation ratio of 1.04 for 97% of the time for 90 consecutive days.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
