The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

The Complexity of Porous Media Flow Characterized in a Microfluidic Model Based on Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy and Micro-PIV
D. A. M. de Winter,Kilian Weishaupt,S. Scheller,Steffen Frey,Amir Raoof,S. M. Hassanizadeh,S. M. Hassanizadeh,Rainer Helmig +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the complexity of a steady-state flow through porous media is revealed using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and the results provide insight into challenges in upscaling hydrodynamic dispersion from pore scale to representative elementary volume.

Emergent behaviors in RBCs flows in micro-channels using digital particle image velocimetry.
TL;DR: The collective behaviors of RBCs in a micro-channel in unsteady conditions are investigated, using a simplified monitoring set-up and implementing a 2D image processing procedure based on the digital particle image velocimetry, a proof of concept toward the realization of a general-purpose microfluidic LOC device for in-vitro flow analysis of R BCs collective behaviors.

Quantitative comparison of experimental and Mohr-Coulomb finite element method simulation flow characteristics from quasi two-dimensional flat-bottomed bins
TL;DR: In this paper, four flow characteristics obtained from Eulerian finite element method (FEM) simulations using a Mohr-Coulomb material model are quantitatively compared to experiments performed on laboratory-scale concentric and eccentric quasi two-dimensional flat-bottomed bins.

A new column collapse apparatus for the characterisation of the flowability of granular materials
TL;DR: In this paper, a quasi-two-dimensional set-up with novel features including: a lifting gate activated by a parallelogram mechanism for material release, a reversible pneumatic circuit to impose fluidised and vacuum conditions to the initial granular column, a set of load cells to monitor the basal load distribution during flow propagation, a 3D laser line profile sensor to scan the free surface morphology of the samples at rest, and a high-speed video recording set to capture nearwall flow visualisations and relevant kinematic measures by particle image velocimetry.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
