Abstract
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.

Theory of cross-correlation analysis of PIV images : Image analysis as measuring technique in flows

R. D. Keane, +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, cross-correlation methods of interrogation of successive single-exposure frames can be used to measure the separation of pairs of particle images between successive frames, which can be optimized in terms of spatial resolution, detection rate, accuracy and reliability.

A four-organ-chip for interconnected long-term co-culture of human intestine, liver, skin and kidney equivalents

TL;DR: This study is the first approach to establish a system for in vitro microfluidic ADME profiling and repeated dose systemic toxicity testing of drug candidates over 28 days in co-culture, and assures near to physiological fluid-to-tissue ratios.

Topological defects in epithelia govern cell death and extrusion.

TL;DR: A mechanism for apoptotic cell extrusion is proposed: spontaneously formed topological defects in epithelia govern cell fate, and the ability to control extrusion hotspots by geometrically inducing defects through microcontact printing of patterned monolayers is demonstrated.

Phototactic guidance of a tissue-engineered soft-robotic ray.

TL;DR: Inspired by the relatively simple morphological blueprint provided by batoid fish such as stingrays and skates, a biohybrid system that enables an artificial animal—a tissue-engineered ray—to swim and phototactically follow a light cue is created.

Optimization of particle image velocimeters. I, Double pulsed systems

TL;DR: In this paper, a set of six non-dimensional parameters that are the most significant in optimizing particle image velocimeter performance are identified, which are the data validation criterion, the particle image density, the relative in-plane image displacement, a velocity gradient parameter, and the ratio of the mean image diameter to the interrogation spot diameter.

Advances in iterative multigrid PIV image processing

TL;DR: An image-processing technique that performs iterative interrogation of particle image velocimetry (PIV) recordings based on cross-correlation enhances the matching performances by means of a relative transformation between the interrogation areas, showing that a remarkable improvement can be obtained in terms of precision and dynamic range.

The effect of a discrete window offset on the accuracy of cross-correlation analysis of digital PIV recordings

TL;DR: In this article, the location of the displacement-correlation peak in PIV images is optimized by the use of a window offset equal to the integer-pixel displacement, and the effect is predicted by an analytical model for the statistical properties of estimators for the displacement.

Iterative multigrid approach in PIV image processing with discrete window offset

TL;DR: The improved cross-correlation algorithm has been applied to the measurement of the turbulent flow past a backward facing step (BFS) and a systematic comparison is presented with Direct Numerical Simulation data available on the subject.
