TLDR
The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Vortex-induced vibration and galloping of prisms with triangular cross-sections
TL;DR: In this paper, a flexible mounted triangular prism allowed to oscillate in the cross-flow direction is studied experimentally, covering the entire range of possible angles of attack, and the frequency of oscillations locks into the natural frequency twice: once approaching from the Strouhal frequencies and once from half the strouhal frequency.

A two-dimensional depth-averaged -rheology for dense granular avalanches
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduced depth-integrated viscous terms into the momentum balance equations by extending the depth-averaged -rheology for dense granular flows to two spatial dimensions.

Strong triaxial coupling and anomalous Poisson effect in collagen networks
Ehsan Ban,Hailong Wang,Hailong Wang,J. Matthew Franklin,Jan Liphardt,Paul A. Janmey,Vivek B. Shenoy +6 more
TL;DR: A 3D framework to describe the unusual nonlinear mechanics of collagen networks, in particular, the abnormally large lateral contraction and concomitant stiffening when stretched, is developed and found that accounting for the Poisson effect leads to a 100-fold increase in the perceived elastic stiffness of thin collagen samples in extension tests.

Partial regularisation of the incompressible μ(I)-rheology for granular flow
Thomas Barker,John Gray +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, changes to the functional form of the curve are considered, in order to maximise the range of well-posed inertial numbers, while preserving the overall structure of the equations.

TL;DR: A four-organ-chip interconnecting miniaturized human intestine, liver, brain and kidney equivalents that will pave the way for autologous coculture cross-talk assays, disease induction and subsequent drug testing is designed.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
