Abstract
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.

Jet-paddling jellies: swimming performance in the Rhizostomeae jellyfish Catostylus mosaicus.

TL;DR: Blue-blubber jellyfish have a relatively high propulsive efficiency compared with other swimmers, which they achieve by manipulating the water around them with their flexible bodies, indicating that economical locomotion could be a contributing factor in the ecological success of these medusan swimmers.

Stability of a Liquid Jet Impinging on Confined Saturated Sand.

TL;DR: This Letter shows that when the liquid jet forms a crater, two situations arise: for weak or no erosion and for open craters, the jet is stationary and the frequency of the jet oscillations depends on the inertial velocity, the jets dispersion and the ratio between the injector cross section and the confinement length.

Effect of Marangoni Convection on the Perovskite Thin Liquid Film Deposition.

TL;DR: In this paper, the evaporation and deposition of a perovskite thin liquid film on a hydrophilic substrate, also in some cases subjected to ultrasonic vibrations, are studied.

Stop-and-go droplet swimmers

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate bimodal gait switching in autophoretic droplet swimmers, showing that higher hydrodynamic modes become excitable with increasing viscosity, while the recurrent mode-switching is driven by the droplet's interaction with self-generated chemical gradients.

Large-field-of-view optical elastography using digital image correlation for biological soft tissue investigation.

TL;DR: The implementation discussed here is clinically sound, based on a spectrally engineered illumination source that enables imaging of biological surface markers (blood vessels) with high contrast and a rolling indenter, which enables the investigation of large organs with reduced measurement time compared to a scanning approach.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3

TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

Adaptive histogram equalization and its variations

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry

TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
