The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Integrating unmanned aerial systems and LSPIV for rapid, cost-effective stream gauging
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) derived from videos captured by cameras on a UAS and a fixed tripod to obtain discharge measurements at ten different stream locations in Illinois, USA.

Motility-induced fracture reveals a ductile-to-brittle crossover in a simple animal’s epithelia
TL;DR: A multi-modal study of a simple yet highly dynamic organism, Trichoplax adhaerens, is carried out and the discovery of abrupt, bulk epithelial tissue fractures induced by the organism's own motility is reported.

TL;DR: In this article, the analysis and optimization of a dual-impeller design in terms of mixing, hydrodynamics, mass transfer properties and power input in a mechanically stirred digester devoted to bio-hydrogen production through acidogenic fermentation of lignocellulosic waste were compared.

Unsteady sedimentation of a sphere in wormlike micellar fluids
Yiran Zhang,Susan J. Muller +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, flow transitions in the settling of a sphere in non-shear-banding micelle solutions are mapped and the onset of unsteady sedimentation correlates with an extensional Deborah number, while velocity fluctuations are related to a shear Deborah number and an elastic Mach number.

Surfactant Variations in Porous Media Localize Capillary Instabilities during Haines Jumps.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used confocal microscopy to measure velocity and interfacial tension between a trapped wetting phase with a surfactant and a flowing, invading nonwetting phase in a porous medium.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
