TLDR
The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report bimodal motility in autophoretic droplet swimmers, driven by characteristic interfacial flow patterns for each propulsive mode, and demonstrate a dynamical transition from quasiballistic to bimanual chaotic propulsion by controlling the viscosity of the environment.

A size threshold governs Caenorhabditis elegans developmental progression.
TL;DR: A critical worm size appears to trigger developmental progression, and may contribute to prolonged lifespan under dietary restriction, and in agreement with a simple threshold size model.

Disorder Suppresses Chaos in Viscoelastic Flows.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the onset of spatiotemporal velocity fluctuations for a viscoelastic flow through microfluidic pillar arrays, having controlled variations of geometric disorder, and showed that disorder introduces preferential flow paths that promote shear over extensional deformation and enhance flow stability by locally reducing polymer stretching.

Measuring the velocity fields of granular flows – Employment of a multi-pass two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (2D-PIV) approach
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors address the main challenges of granular PIV applications and systematically test the open-source window deformation multi-pass code, PIVlab [Thielicke and Stamhuis, J Open Res Soft, 2014], for dry granular flows in rotating drum and chute flow experiments.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
