Abstract
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.

Host Gut Motility and Bacterial Competition Drive Instability in a Model Intestinal Microbiota

TL;DR: Evidence is provided that host-mediated spatial structuring and stochastic perturbation of communities along with bacterial competition drives population dynamics within the gut, and the capacity of the enteric nervous system to affect stability of gut microbiota constituents is highlighted, demonstrating that the ‘gut-brain axis’ is bidirectional.

Simulated instream restoration structures offer smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) swimming and energetic advantages at high flow velocities

TL;DR: In this article, mixed outcomes have been reported regarding structure effectiveness, while mechanized methods have been used to install instream structures in fish habitat enhancement, but the results were limited.

Steady Flow Generated by a Core Oscillating in a Rotating Spherical Cavity

TL;DR: In this paper, an inner solid core in a fluid-filled rotating spherical cavity is experimentally studied and it is found that the oscillation of the core generates axisymmetric azimuthal fluid flow in the cavity which has the form of nested liquid columns rotating with different angular velocities.

Cross-sectional focusing of red blood cells in a constricted microfluidic channel

TL;DR: In this paper, the cross-sectional distribution of living and rigid red blood cells passing a constricted microfluidic channel was explored by tracking individual cells in multiple layers across the channel depth and width.

Experimental Investigation on the Impact Dynamics of Saturated Granular Flows on Rigid Barriers

TL;DR: In this article, the role of particle size grading and degree of fluid saturation on impact behavior of fluid-saturated granular flows on a model rigid barrier in a small-scale flume was investigated.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3

TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Adaptive histogram equalization and its variations

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry

TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
