TLDR
The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Flame stability and emissions characteristics of liquid ammonia spray co-fired with methane in a single stage swirl combustor
Ekenechukwu C. Okafor,Hirofumi Yamashita,Akihiro Hayakawa,K.D. Kunkuma A. Somarathne,Taku Kudo,Taku Tsujimura,Masahiro Uchida,Shintaro Ito,Hideaki Kobayashi +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the first successful study on liquid ammonia spray combustion in a novel swirl combustor with preheated air at 500 K was performed, and the results showed that the spray flame was stable for global equivalence ratios, ϕ, between 0.66 and 1.37.

Face stability analysis of shield-driven tunnels shallowly buried in dry sand using 1-g large-scale model tests
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the face stability of shield-driven tunnels shallowly buried in dry sand using 1-g large-scale model tests and found that, as the tunnel face moves backwards, the support pressure at the tunnel faces drops sharply initially, then rebounds slightly, and tends to be stabilized at the end.

Synthesizing large-scale pyroclastic flows: Experimental design, scaling, and first results from PELE
TL;DR: The pyroclastic flow eruption large-scale experiment (PELE) as mentioned in this paper is a large scale facility for experimental studies of PDCs, which is used to generate high-energy currents involving 500-6500m3 natural volcanic material and air that achieve velocities of 7-30m−1, flow thicknesses of 2-4.5m, and runouts of >35m.

Dynamic Control of Particle Deposition in Evaporating Droplets by an External Point Source of Vapor
TL;DR: Deterministic emergence and real-time control of Marangoni flows within the evaporating droplet by an external point source of vapor are demonstrated and modulated to pattern colloids on surfaces in a controllable manner.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
