The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.Abstract:
Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) is a non-intrusive analysis technique that is very popular for mapping flows quantitatively. To get accurate results, in particular in complex flow fields, a number of challenges have to be faced and solved: The quality of the flow measurements is affected by computational details such as image pre-conditioning, sub-pixel peak estimators, data validation procedures, interpolation algorithms and smoothing methods. The accuracy of several algorithms was determined and the best performing methods were implemented in a user-friendly open-source tool for performing DPIV flow analysis in Matlab.read more

Epithelial Viscoelasticity Is Regulated by Mechanosensitive E-cadherin Turnover.
K. Venkatesan Iyer,Romina Piscitello-Gómez,Joris Paijmans,Frank Jülicher,Frank Jülicher,Suzanne Eaton +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that p120-dependent mechanosensitive E-cadherin turnover regulates viscoelastic behavior of epithelial tissues, which implies a lower viscosity of wing epithelium.

A Single-Cell Biochemistry Approach Reveals PAR Complex Dynamics during Cell Polarization
TL;DR: A single-cell protein interaction assay that yields information about dynamic protein complex regulation in vivo, uncovered striking regulation of PAR complex composition and stoichiometry during Caenorhabditis elegans zygote polarization.

Evaporating pure, binary and ternary droplets: thermal effects and axial symmetry breaking
Christian Diddens,Huanshu Tan,Pengyu Lv,Michel Versluis,Jgm Hans Kuerten,Xuehua Zhang,Detlef Lohse +6 more
TL;DR: Tan et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the evaporation of mixture droplets in more detail, by successively increasing the mixture complexity from pure water over a binary water-ethanol mixture to the ternary Ouzo mixture (water, ethanol and anise oil).

Non-invasive perturbations of intracellular flow reveal physical principles of cell organization

TL;DR: Focused-light-induced cytoplasmic streaming (FLUCS), a non-invasive technique, can be used to invert asymmetric cell division in Caenorhabditis elegans zygotes and finds that asymmetriccell division is a binary decision based on gradually varying PAR polarization states.

Complete measurement of helicity and its dynamics in vortex tubes.
TL;DR: The results show that helicity can remain constant even in a viscous fluid and provide an improved basis for understanding and manipulating helicity in real flows.

The Design and Implementation of FFTW3
Matteo Frigo,Steven G. Johnson +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that such an approach can yield an implementation of the discrete Fourier transform that is competitive with hand-optimized libraries, and the software structure that makes the current FFTW3 version flexible and adaptive is described.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

TL;DR: It is concluded that clipped ahe should become a method of choice in medical imaging and probably also in other areas of digital imaging, and that clip ahe can be made adequately fast to be routinely applied in the normal display sequence.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.
