From "Gut Feeling" to Objectivity: Machine Preservation of the Liver as a Tool to Assess Organ Viability
TL;DR: While the use of machine perfusion technology has the potential to reduce and even remove uncertainty regarding liver graft viability, analysis of large datasets are needed to provide sufficient information to enable viability parameters to be defined and validated.

The first case of ischemia‐free organ transplantation in humans: A proof of concept
Xiaoshun He,Zhiyong Guo,Qiang Zhao,Weiqiang Ju,Dongping Wang,Linwei Wu,Lu Yang,Fei Ji,Yunhua Tang,Zhiheng Zhang,Shanzhou Huang,Linhe Wang,Zebin Zhu,Kunpeng Liu,Yanling Zhu,Yifang Gao,Wei Xiong,Ming Han,Bing Liao,Maogen Chen,Yi Ma,Xiao Feng Zhu,Wenqi Huang,Chang-jie Cai,Xiangdong Guan,Xian Chang Li,Jiefu Huang,Jiefu Huang +27 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a novel procedure called ischemia-free organ transplantation (IFOT) for patients with end-stage liver disease, where the liver graft with severe macrovesicular steatosis was donated from a 25-year-old man.

Improving the Supply and Quality of Deceased-Donor Organs for Transplantation
Stefan G. Tullius,Hamid Rabb +1 more
TL;DR: The supply and quality of Deceased-Donor Organs and Solid-organ transplantation is the treatment of choice for many patients with end-stage diseases, but the supply is limited.

Markmann,Mehmet Toner,Mehmet Toner,Heidi Yeh,Korkut Uygun,Korkut Uygun +24 more
TL;DR: An improved supercooling protocol is described that averts freezing of human livers by minimizing favorable sites of ice nucleation and homogeneous preconditioning with protective agents during machine perfusion, effectively extending the ex vivo life of the organ by 27 h.

Liver Transplantation Today: Where We Are Now and Where We Are Going.
Adam S. Bodzin,Talia Baker +1 more
TL;DR: The liver transplant community in 2017 continued to be most significantly challenged by an overwhelming disparity between the need for liver transplant and the shortage of donor organs.

Liver Transplantation Using Donation After Cardiac Death Donors: Long-Term Follow-Up from a Single Center
M. E. de Vera,R Lopez-Solis,Igor Dvorchik,S Campos,W Morris,Anthony J. Demetris,Paulo Fontes,J. W. Marsh +7 more
TL;DR: There was a lack of survival benefit in DCD livers utilized in patients with model for end‐stage liver disease (MELD) ≤30 or those not on organ‐perfusion support, as graft survival was significantly lower compared to DBD patients, however, DCD and DBD subjects transplanted with MELD >30 or on organ-perfusions support had similar graft survival, suggesting a potentially greater benefit of DCDLivers in critically ill patients.
