TLDR
This paper reviews a novel hypothesis about the functions of slow wave sleep-the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis, which accounts for a large number of experimental facts, makes several specific predictions, and has implications for both sleep and mood disorders.

Low-frequency rhythmic electrocutaneous hand stimulation during slow-wave night sleep: Physiological and therapeutic effects

TL;DR: Stimulation caused significant increase in average duration of SWS and EEG SWA power, and also well-being and mood improvement in subjects with lowered emotional tone, and the results can be of value both for understanding the physiological mechanisms of sleep homeostasis and for development of non-pharmacological therapy of sleep disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of the temporal organization of sleep spindles in the human sleep EEG using a phenomenological modeling approach.

TL;DR: The temporal organization of sleep spindles is analyzed and it is discussed to what extent the observed interevent intervals correspond to properties of stationary stochastic processes and whether additional slow processes, such as slow oscillations, have to be assumed.

Night-time unravelling of the brain web: impaired synaptic downscaling in ESES--the Penelope syndrome.

TL;DR: It was recently shown that the slope of slow waves is an even more sensitive measure of cortical synaptic strength than SWA amount, and multi-scale coupling relationships obtained from intracerebral recordings have demonstrated that also in humans the ‘up-state’ of sleepSlow Wave Activity is coupled to multi-unit-activity bursts as well as to high-frequency oscillations (HFO), and is alternated with ‘down- state’ corresponding to global reductions in activity.

The Memory, Cognitive and PsychologicalFunctions of Sleep: Update from Electroencephalographic and Neuroimaging Studies

Roumen Kirov, +1 more
TL;DR: In most vertebrates and all mammal species, including man, sleep displays a specific architecture roughly described as a cyclic occurrence of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep, and along with these functions, sleep is shown to play a key role for important cognitive and psychological processes.
Journal ArticleDOI

An analysis of the transitions between down and up states of the cortical slow oscillation under urethane anaesthesia.

TL;DR: The results do not strongly support the hypothesis of a bistability in cortical neurons; rather, they suggest the cortical manifestation of the oscillation is a result of a step-change in input to the cortical neurons.

An Energy Budget for Signaling in the Grey Matter of the Brain

TL;DR: The estimates of energy usage predict the use of distributed codes, with ≤15% of neurons simultaneously active, to reduce energy consumption and allow greater computing power from a fixed number of neurons.

Regional differences in synaptogenesis in human cerebral cortex.

TL;DR: Findings in the human resemble those in rhesus monkeys, including overproduction of synaptic contacts in infancy, persistence of high levels of synaptic density to late childhood or adolescence, the absolute values of maximum and adult synaptic density, and layer specific differences.

The Cumulative Cost of Additional Wakefulness: Dose-Response Effects on Neurobehavioral Functions and Sleep Physiology From Chronic Sleep Restriction and Total Sleep Deprivation

TL;DR: It appears that even relatively moderate sleep restriction can seriously impair waking neurobehavioral functions in healthy adults, and sleep debt is perhaps best understood as resulting in additional wakefulness that has a neurobiological "cost" which accumulates over time.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reactivation of hippocampal ensemble memories during sleep.

TL;DR: In this paper, large ensembles of hippocampal "place cells" were recorded from three rats during spatial behavioral tasks and in slow-wave sleep preceding and following these behaviors, showing an increased tendency to fire together during subsequent sleep, in comparison to sleep episodes preceding the behavioral tasks.
