The Definition and Prevalence of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome.

TLDR
Obesity is associated with a large decrease in life expectancy, but up to 30% of obese patients are metabolically healthy with insulin sensitivity similar to healthy normal weight individuals, lower visceral fat content, and lower intima media thickness of the carotid artery than the majority of metabolically "unhealthy" obese patients.
Abstract
Increase in prevalence of obesity has become a worldwide major health problem in adults, as well as among children and adolescents. Furthermore, total adiposity and truncal subcutaneous fat accumulation during adolescence are positively and independently associated with atherosclerosis at adult ages. Centrally accumulation of body fat is associated with insulin resistance, whereas distribution of body fat in a peripheral pattern is metabolically less important. Obesity is associated with a large decrease in life expectancy. The effect of extreme obesity on mortality is greater among younger than older adults. In this respect, obesity is also associated with increased risk of several cancer types. However, up to 30% of obese patients are metabolically healthy with insulin sensitivity similar to healthy normal weight individuals, lower visceral fat content, and lower intima media thickness of the carotid artery than the majority of metabolically “unhealthy” obese patients.

Epidemiology, aetiology, and management of ischaemic stroke in young adults

TL;DR: Progress has been made in identifying patients with a considerable risk of stroke occurrence, such as those with patent foramen ovale, and future prevention studies might result in a decrease in the incidence of stroke and its sequelae in young adults.

Body adiposity index and other indexes of body composition in the SAPHIR study: association with cardiovascular risk factors.

TL;DR: The accuracy of anthropometric surrogate markers such as the body adiposity index (BAI) and other common indexes like the body mass index (BMI), waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to‐height ratio ( WHtR) to predict metabolic sequelae is essential for its use in clinical practice.

Life Years Lost and Lifetime Health Care Expenditures Associated With Diabetes in the U.S., National Health Interview Survey, 1997–2000

TL;DR: It is shown that diabetes is associated with large decreases in life expectancy and large increases in lifetime health care expenditures, with highest life expectancy being for the overweight.

"The metabolic syndrome... is dead": These reports are an exaggeration

TL;DR: The concept that the metabolic syndrome is a consequence of obesity and insulin resistance, provides a useful "life-style changes" approach for prevention and treatment, and could be a useful additional contributor in estimation of global cardiovascular risk beyond age, high cholesterol or other standard risk factors.
