TL;DR: It was found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms, which suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.
Journal ArticleDOI
Warming alters the energetic structure and function but not resilience of soil food webs.
Benjamin Schwarz,Andrew D. Barnes,Madhav P. Thakur,Ulrich Brose,Marcel Ciobanu,Peter B. Reich,Roy L. Rich,Roy L. Rich,Benjamin Rosenbaum,Artur Stefanski,Nico Eisenhauer +10 more
TL;DR: Warming interacts with forest disturbance and drought to shape the energetic structure of soil food webs; these changes can undermine the provision of multiple ecosystem functions in transitional boreal–temperate forests and threaten the provisioning of multiplecosystem functions in boreal-temperate ecotonal forests.
Journal ArticleDOI

Journal ArticleDOI
Seeing through the static: the temporal dimension of plant–animal mutualistic interactions
Paul J. CaraDonna,Laura A. Burkle,Benjamin Schwarz,Julian Resasco,Tiffany M. Knight,Gita Benadi,Nico Blüthgen,Carsten F. Dormann,Qiang Fang,Jochen Fründ,Benoit Gauzens,Christopher N. Kaiser-Bunbury,Rachael Winfree,Diego P. Vázquez +13 more
TL;DR: A review of the growing literature on temporal dynamics of plant-animal mutualistic networks including pollination, seed dispersal and ant defence mutualisms finds that at the finest temporal scales, mutualistic interactions are highly dynamic, with considerable variation in network structure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Non-significant tree diversity but significant identity effects on earthworm communities in three tree diversity experiments
Benjamin Schwarz,Christoph Dietrich,Christoph Dietrich,Simone Cesarz,Simone Cesarz,Michael Scherer-Lorenzen,Harald Auge,Elke Schulz,Nico Eisenhauer,Nico Eisenhauer +9 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that tree identity, but not tree diversity drives earthworm communities in young tree stands, and future studies should consider litter and root traits of trees, and both the effects of trees and herbaceous plants in the understory to explain variations in ecological communities and ecosystem processes.
