Journal ArticleDOI
Soil bacterial networks are less stable under drought than fungal networks.
Franciska T. de Vries,Robert I. Griffiths,Mark J. Bailey,Hayley Craig,Mariangela Girlanda,Hyun S. Gweon,Sara Hallin,Aurore Kaisermann,Aidan M. Keith,Marina Kretzschmar,Philippe Lemanceau,Erica Lumini,Kelly E. Mason,Anna Oliver,Nick Ostle,James I. Prosser,Cécile Thion,Bruce C. Thomson,Richard D. Bardgett +18 more
TL;DR: It is shown in grassland mesocosms that drought promotes destabilising properties in soil bacterial, but not fungal, co-occurrence networks, and that changes in bacterial communities link more strongly to soil functioning during recovery than do changes in fungal communities.

TL;DR: It was found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms, which suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.
Journal ArticleDOI
Natural capital and ecosystem services, developing an appropriate soils framework as a basis for valuation
David A. Robinson,Neal Hockley,David Cooper,Bridget A. Emmett,Aidan M. Keith,Inma Lebron,Brian Reynolds,Edward Tipping,Andrew Tye,Chris W. Watts,William R. Whalley,Helaina Black,G.P. Warren,J.S. Robinson +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an appropriate ecosystems framework for soils should incorporate soil stocks (natural capital) showing their contribution to stock-flows and emergent fund-services as part of the supply chain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Natural Capital, Ecosystem Services, and Soil Change: Why Soil Science Must Embrace an Ecosystems Approach
David A. Robinson,Neal Hockley,Estelle J. Dominati,Inma Lebron,Kate M. Scow,Brian Reynolds,Bridget A. Emmett,Aidan M. Keith,L. W. de Jonge,P. Schjonning,Per Moldrup,Scott B. Jones,Markus Tuller +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify four important areas of research: (i) framework development; (ii) quantifying the soil resource, stocks, fluxes, transformations, and identifying indicators; (iii) valuing the soil resources for its ecosystem services; and (iv) developing decision-support tools.
Journal ArticleDOI
Land-use and land-management change: relationships with earthworm and fungi communities and soil structural properties
TL;DR: Meta-analysis highlighted a consistent trend of increased earthworm and fungal community abundances and complexity following transitions to lower intensity and later successional land uses, raising the potential to manage landscapes to increase ecosystem service provision from soil biota in relation to regulation of soil structure and water flow.
