Estimating global injuries morbidity and mortality: methods and data used in the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study

Spencer L. James, +568 more
- 24 Aug 2020 -
TL;DR: The Global Burden of Disease 2017 demonstrated a complex and sophisticated series of analytical steps using the largest known database of morbidity and mortality data on injuries, which should be used to help inform injury prevention policy making and resource allocation.

Experimental surveillance using data on sales of over-the-counter medications--Japan, November 2003-April 2004.

TL;DR: OTC sales do not appear to be a good candidate for a national real-time detection system for influenza epidemics in Japan and the hypothesis was formed that an ill person will purchase OTC medications first and visit a physician only if the condition does not resolve or worsens.
Journal ArticleDOI

Epidemics of Vector-borne Diseases Observed in Infectious Disease Surveillance in Japan, 2000-2005

TL;DR: The study reveals the epidemiologic features of both temporal and geographic distributions of cases of 6 vector-borne diseases in Japan, 2000-2005, which increased for dengue fever and Japanese spotted fever, and declined for malaria and scrub typhus.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of Meteorological and Geographical Factors on the Epidemics of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Island-Type Territory, East Asia

TL;DR: Weather conditions and geographic location could play some role in affecting HFMD epidemics and regional integrated surveillance of HFMD in East Asia is needed for mitigating the disease risk.
Journal ArticleDOI

Burden of injury along the development spectrum: associations between the Socio-demographic Index and disability-adjusted life year estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Juanita A. Haagsma, +327 more
- 08 Jan 2020 -
TL;DR: The overall global pattern is that of declining injury burden with increasing SDI, however, not all injuries follow this pattern, which suggests multiple underlying mechanisms influencing injury DALYs.
