Abstract: We investigated the occurrence and distribution of oscillatory activity in local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the frontal motor cortex of behaving monkeys performing skilled voluntary movements. LFPs were recorded simultaneously from up to 12 sites distributed throughout motor cortex while monkeys performed a visually guided, instructed delay task using the wrist or digits. Oscillatory activity between 15 and 50 Hz was evident in the LFP recorded from both primary motor cortex and premotor areas. Oscillations occurred preferentially before the visual cue to initiate movement but were infrequent during movement. Oscillations typically stopped before movement initiation during the wrist task, although they often continued into the initial phases of movement during the digit task. The relationship of oscillations to task performance was consistent across trials over periods of many months, although the amplitude and duration of oscillations varied across trials and days. Interactions between pairs of LFP recordings, evaluated with cross-correlation analysis, revealed synchronous oscillations over long distances (> 7 mm) and across primary motor cortex and premotor recording sites. These studies demonstrate that oscillations recorded in the LFP in motor cortex during trained motor tasks are not related to the details of movement execution but may be related to aspects of movement preparation.

Abstract: In many regions of the cerebral cortex, Ca2+ influx through NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) sensitive glutamate receptors (NMDA receptors) can trigger two forms of synaptic plasticity: long-term depression (LTD) and long-term potentiation (LTP). LTD is induced by low levels of postsynaptic NMDA-receptor activation, for instance in response to low-frequency stimulation, whereas LTP is induced by the stronger activation that occurs following high-frequency stimulation. Theoretical studies have shown that the properties of synaptic LTD and LTP can account for many aspects of experience-dependent plasticity in the developing visual cortex, provided that the LTD-LTP crossover point (the modification threshold, theta(m)) varies as a function of the history of cortical activity. Here we provide direct experimental evidence that the value of theta(m) depends on sensory experience. We find in visual cortex of light-deprived rats that LTP is enhanced and LTD diminished over a range of stimulation frequencies, and that these effects can be reversed by as little as two days of light exposure. Our findings support the idea that a variable synaptic modification threshold allows synaptic weights in neural networks to achieve a stable equilibrium.

Abstract: The pancreas emerges independently from dorsal and ventral domains of embryonic gut endoderm. Gene inactivation experiments in mice have identified factors required for dorsal pancreas development, but factors that initiate the ventral pancreas have remained elusive. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that the emergence of the ventral pancreas is related to the emergence of the liver. We find that the liver and ventral pancreas are specified at the same time and in the same general domain of cells. Using embryo tissue explantation experiments, we find that the default fate of the ventral foregut endoderm is to activate the pancreas gene program. FGF signalling from the cardiac mesoderm diverts this endoderm to express genes for liver instead of those for pancreas. No evidence was found to indicate that the cell type choice for pancreas or liver involves a selection for growth or viability. Cardiac mesoderm or FGF induces the local expression of sonic hedgehog, which in turn is inhibitory to pancreas but not to liver. The bipotential precursor cell population for pancreas and liver in embryonic development and its fate selection by FGF has features that appear to be recapitulated in the adult pancreas and are reflected in the evolution of these organs.

Abstract: The Lorentzian anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence implies a map between local operators in supergravity and nonlocal operators in the CFT. By explicit computation we construct CFT operators which are dual to local bulk fields in the semiclassical limit. The computation is done for general dimension in global, Poincar\'e and Rindler coordinates. We find that the CFT operators can be taken to have compact support in a region of the complexified boundary whose size is set by the bulk radial position. We show that at finite $N$ the number of independent commuting operators localized within a bulk volume saturates the holographic bound.

Abstract: Seven-nanometer FePt nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and assembled on graphene (G) by a solution-phase self-assembly method. These G/FePt NPs were a more active and durable catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1 M HClO4 than the same NPs or commercial Pt NPs deposited on conventional carbon support. The G/FePt NPs annealed at 100 °C for 1 h under Ar + 5% H2 exhibited specific ORR activities of 1.6 mA/cm2 at 0.512 V and 0.616 mA/cm2 at 0.557 V (vs Ag/AgCl). As a comparison, the commercial Pt NPs (2–3 nm) had specific activities of 0.271 and 0.07 mA/cm2 at the same potentials. The G/FePt NPs were also much more stable in the ORR condition and showed nearly no activity change after 10 000 potential sweeps. The work demonstrates that G is indeed a promising support to improve NP activity and durability for practical catalytic applications.
