Abstract: Hygroscopic behaviour is an inherent characteristic of natural fibres which can influence their applications as textile fabrics and composite reinforcements. In this study, the water vapour sorption kinetic properties of cotton, filter paper, flax, hemp, jute, and sisal fibres were determined using a dynamic vapour sorption apparatus and the results were analyzed by use of a parallel exponential kinetics (PEK) model. With all of the fibres tested, the magnitude of the sorption hysteresis observed varied, but it was always greatest at the higher end of the hygroscopic range. Flax and sisal fibres displayed the lowest and highest total hysteresis, respectively. The PEK model, which is comprised of fast and slow sorption components, exhibited hysteresis in terms of mass for both processes between the adsorption and desorption isotherm. The hysteresis derived from the slow sorption process was less than from the fast process for all tested fibres. The fast processes for cotton and filter paper dominated the isotherm process; however, the hemp and sisal fibres displayed a dominant slow process in the isotherm run. The characteristic time for the fast sorption process did not vary between adsorption and desorption, except at the top end of the hygroscopic range. The characteristic time for the slow process was invariably larger for the desorption process. The physical interpretation of the PEK model is discussed.

Abstract: A major problem in the evolutionary design of combinational circuits is the problem of scale. This refers to the design of electronic circuits in which the number of gates required to implement the optimal circuit is too high to search the space of all designs in reasonable time, even by evolution. The reason is twofold: firstly, the size of the search space becomes enormous as the number of gates required to implement the circuit is increased, and secondly, the time required to calculate the fitness of a circuit grows as the size of the truth table of the circuit. This paper studies the evolutionary design of combinational circuits, particularly the three-bit multiplier circuit, in which the basic building blocks are small sub-circuits, modules inferred from other evolved designs. The structure of the resulting fitness landscapes is studied and it is shown that in general the principles of evolving digital circuits are scalable. Thus to evolve digital circuits using modules is faster, since the building blocks of the circuit are sub-circuits rather than two-input gates. This can also be a disadvantage, since the number of gates of the evolved designs grows as the size of the modules used.

Abstract: Background People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have higher levels of health needs compared with the general population, many of which are unrecognised and unmet. While there has been interest and research into the primary health provision for this group, there has been a more limited focus on addressing their care received in general hospitals. Access to health care has predominated in the literature, with less attention being paid to the experiences of people with ID as users of general hospital care. Method A qualitative focus group methodology was used. Eleven adults with ID, nine parents and five paid carers of adults with ID participated. The focus groups were audiotaped and transcriptions were analysed using principles of grounded theory. Results The analysed data highlighted key themes identified from the experiences of participants. These were the interrelated issues of feelings, particularly anxiety and fear, communication and behaviour problems; the practicalities of being in or attending hospitals, including the role played by carers; and issues around perceived discrimination and negative comments. Conclusions The experiences of participants in this study concur with and add to concern expressed in recent reports and published research. Wide ranging implications are discussed for further research, wider policy development, clinical practice, local health service provision and education of health professionals.
