Abstract: Thermal decomposition behaviors of a series of imidazolium-type ionic liquid samples were studied by pyrolysis-gas chromatography at 550°C using various detectors. As for the imidazolium halides, haloalkanes and 1-alkylimidazoles corresponding to the alkyl substituents were mainly formed through the nucleophilic attacks of halide ions to the alkyl groups followed by C-N bond cleavage, along with a minor amount of alkenes. Meanwhile, in the case of the ionic liquids with BF4, PF6 and CF3SO3 anions, corresponding alkenes were predominantly produced along with 1-alkylimidazoles rather than haloalkanes. No boron-containing products were found even from the samples with BF4 anion, whereas minor but clear peaks of phosphorous-containing products were observed in the pyrograms of the samples with PF6 anions. As for the samples with longer alkyl group, the pyrolyzates reflecting the C-C bond scissions in the alkyl groups were also formed to some extent. Meanwhile, imidazole rings did not decompose under the experimental conditions at around 550°C.

Abstract: This paper presents a simple nonlinear magnetic analysis for a surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor as an assistant design tool of finite-element analysis (FEA). The equivalent magnetic circuit of the motor used in the proposed analysis is composed of the saturable permeance tips in the stator teeth for considering the local magnetic saturation. As a result, the proposed analysis is capable of calculating the flux distribution and the torque characteristics in the presence of magnetic saturation. The effectiveness of the proposed analysis is verified by comparing with three-dimensional (3-D) FEA in terms of the analytical accuracy. The computation time is greatly reduced as short as 1.5 s while the 3-D FEA requires as much as 32 min for the same evaluation.

Abstract: Computer simulation was carried out for an estimation of the effect of centrifugal force on the formation of graded distribution of solid spherical particles within molten metal. The difference of migration rate between two kinds of spherical particles with different diameter and density was calculated taking account of the application of a centrifugal solid-particle method. Based on the systematic analysis, the capability of fabrication of the functionally graded materials ring with a unique density gradients which comprise the graded distributions of two kinds of solid particles is discussed. The unique gradient was essentially achieved due to the preferential movement of large particles with low density in comparison to small particles with high density.

Abstract: A novel gene transfer system was developed by using liposomes modified with cetylated polyethylenimine (PEI, MW 600). This polycation liposome, PCL, showed remarkable transfection efficiency as monitored by the expression of the GFP reporter gene. Most conventional cationic liposomes require phosphatidylethanolamine or cholesterol as a component, although PCLs did not. Egg yolk phosphatidylcholine- and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine-based PCL were as effective as dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine-based PCLs for gene transfer. Concerning the cytotoxicity against COS-1 cells and hemolytic activity, the PCL was superior to conventional cationic liposome preparations. Furthermore, the transfection efficacy of PCLs was enhanced, instead of being diminished, in the presence of serum. Effective gene transfer was observed in all eight malignant and two normal cells line tested, as well as in COS-1 cells. We also examined the effect of the molecular weight of PEI on PCL-mediated gene transfer, and observed that PEI with a MW of 1800 Da was as effective as that with one of 600, but that PEI of 25 000 was far less effective. Finally, an in vivo study was done in which GFP was effectively expressed in mouse liver after injection of PCL via the portal vein. Thus, PCL represents a new system useful for transfection and gene therapy.
