TL;DR: Three new molybdenyl iodates have been prepared through the hydrothermal reactions of MoO3 with AIO4 at 180 C, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra of these compounds show a high degree of transparency from 1 to 3 eV and a band gap of 3.1 eV.
Abstract: Three new molybdenyl iodates, KMoO3(IO3) (1), RbMoO3(IO3) (2), and CsMoO3(IO3) (3), have been prepared through the hydrothermal reactions of MoO3 with AIO4 (A = K, Rb, or Cs) at 180 °C. These compounds are isolated as nearly colorless, air-stable crystals. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that 1 possesses a corrugated layered structure constructed from molybdenum oxide chains that are bridged by iodate anions. The puckering of the layers is caused by the alignment of bent molybdenyl (MoO22+) groups along one side of the molybdenum oxide chains. The K+ cations separate these layers from one another and serve to balance charge. In contrast, compounds 2 and 3, which are isostructural, form three-dimensional structures with small cavities filled with Rb+ or Cs+ cations. The differences between the structures of 1 and those of 2 and 3 are due to rotation of the molybdenyl units as translation occurs down the molybdenum oxide chains in order to accommodate the increased size of the Rb+ and Cs...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report results obtained from drilling a series of holes into an actively forming sulphide deposit on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and demonstrate the importance of anhydrite in the growth of massive sulphide deposits, despite its absence in those preserved on land.
Abstract: THE hydrothermal circulation of sea water through permeable ocean crust results in rock–water interactions that lead to the formation of massive sulphide deposits. These are the modern analogues of many ancient ophiolite-hosted deposits1–4, such as those exposed in Cyprus. Here we report results obtained from drilling a series of holes into an actively forming sulphide deposit on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. A complex assemblage of sulphide–anhydrite–silica breccias provides striking evidence that such hydrothermal mounds do not grow simply by the accumulation of sulphides on the sea floor. Indeed, the deposit grows largely as an in situ breccia pile, as successive episodes of hydrothermal activity each form new hydrothermal precipitates and cement earlier deposits. During inactive periods, the collapse of sulphide chimneys, dissolution of anhydrite, and disruption by faulting cause brecciation of the deposit. The abundance of anhydrite beneath the present region of focused hydrothermal venting reflects the high temperatures ( > 150 °C) currently maintained within the mound, and implies substantial entrainment of cold sea water into the interior of the deposit. These observations demonstrate the important role of anhydrite in the growth of massive sulphide deposits, despite its absence in those preserved on land.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the most satisfied team members were in virtual teams with effective coordination and communication, while different control structures had no significant impact on virtual team performance.
Abstract: Seeks to determine the impact managerial controls have on the effectiveness of virtual teams. Using an experimental design compares self‐directed virtual teams to counterparts where behavior controls are used as a method of managerial control. The data were collected using 51 student teams of three or four members each from three different countries. The results indicate that the most satisfied team members were in virtual teams with effective coordination and communication. Members of self‐directed virtual teams report higher individual satisfaction with the team and project, while different control structures had no significant impact on virtual team performance. Future research should investigate how these findings generalize to organizational workers, rather than just looking at students. This paper is just a first step investigating one type of managerial control: behavior controls. The small amount of research that has been published on virtual teams has primarily concentrated on self‐directed teams...

TL;DR: A comprehensive state-of-the-art survey of VLC technology, from its physical aspects and communication architecture to its main applications and research challenges, and presents the main research platforms available today.
Abstract: During the last decade, the exponential growth of mobile devices and wireless services created a huge demand for radio frequency-based technologies. Meanwhile, the lighting industry has been revolutionized due to the popularization of LED light bulbs, which are more economical and efficient. In that context, visible light communication (VLC) is a disruptive technology based on LEDs that offers a free spectrum and high data rate, which can potentially serve as a complementary technology to the current radio frequency standards. In this paper, we present a comprehensive state-of-the-art survey of VLC, as well as the main concepts and challenges related to this emergent area. We overview VLC technology, from its physical aspects and communication architecture to its main applications and research challenges. Finally, we present the main research platforms available today, along with a deep analysis of the system design and future directions in the field.

TL;DR: Methods of determining the design correctness of systems as applied to computer programs are surveyed.
Abstract: It is essential to assess the reliability of digital computer systems used for critical real-time control applications (e.g., nuclear power plant safety control systems). This involves the assessment of the design correctness of the combined hardware/software system as well as the reliability of the hardware. In this paper we survey methods of determining the design correctness of systems as applied to computer programs.
