Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of vitamin B6 against chromium (Cr)-induced oxidative stress. Adult male albino Wistar rats (100-120 g) were used in this study. Potassium dichromate, a Cr VI compound, was administered at a dose of 127 mg kg(-1) p.o. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride) was administered at a dose of 100 mg kg(-1) p.o. either alone or 12 h prior to Cr or simultaneously with Cr. Chromium treatment induced oxidative stress in the liver as measured by increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) and decreased vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR). Both pre- and simultaneous treatments countered Cr-induced oxidative stress; pre-treatment was more effective than concurrent administration. The results demonstrate the antioxidant potential of vitamin B6.

Abstract: The present study was aimed to evaluate the anti-hyperglycemic efficacy of Murraya koenigii in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of ethanolic extract of M. koenigii at a dose of 200 mg/kg/ b.w./day for a period of 30 days significantly decreased the levels of blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, urea, uric acid and creatinine in diabetic treated group of animals. Determination of plasma insulin level revealed the insulin stimulatory effect of the extract. The results suggest that M. koenigii possesses statistically significant hypoglycemic potential in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The M. koenigii extract appeared to be more effective than glibenclamide, a known antidiabetic drug.

Abstract: The formation of zinc–zinc phosphate composite coatings by cathodic electrochemical treatment and evaluation of its corrosion resistance is addressed in this paper. The cathodic phosphating process offers some unique advantages—it requires no specific addition of accelerator in the bath, it is capable of producing good quality coatings even at low temperature, it permits deposition of coatings of desired thickness, thus offering benefits in terms of energy savings, decrease in processing cost and improvement in plant life. Being a cathodic process, there is no iron dissolution and no ferric phosphate sludge formation, which renders it an eco-friendly process. Based on the amount of coating mass as a function of process variables and the potential-time measurement, a pictorial model is proposed for the deposition of zinc phosphate coating. The surface morphology of the coatings exhibits plate-like crystals. The corrosion behaviour of cathodically phosphated mild steel substrate in 3.5% sodium chloride solution exhibits the stability of these coatings, which last for a week with no red rust formation. This is due to the presence of a composite layer of zinc and zinc phosphate that acts as a mechanical barrier against further corrosion for a considerably longer time. Being a cathodic process, the possibility of hydrogenation of steel is the major limitation of this methodology. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
