Abstract: Immune activation is an effective as well as protective approach against emerging infectious diseases. The immunomodulatory activities of Triphala (Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica and Emblica officinalis) were assessed by testing the various neutrophil functions like adherence, phagocytosis (phagocytic index (P.I) and avidity index (A.I)) and nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction in albino rats. In recent years much attention is being focused on the immunological changes occur during stress. Noise (100 dB) stress for 4 h/d for 15 d, was employed to alter the neutrophil functions. The neutrophil function tests and corticosterone levels were carried out in eight different groups of animals, namely control, Triphala, noise-stress, Triphala noise-stress, and corresponding immunized groups were used. Sheep red blood cells (SRBC 5 x 10(9) cells per ml) were used for immunizing the animals that belongs to immunized groups. In Triphala administration (1 g/kg/d for 48 d), A.I was found to be significantly enhanced in the Triphala group, while the remaining neutrophil functions and steroid levels were not altered significantly. However the neutrophil functions were significantly enhanced in the Triphala immunized group with a significant decrease in corticosterone level was observed. Upon exposure to the noise-stress, the neutrophil functions were significantly suppressed and followed by a significant increase in the corticosterone levels were observed in both the noise-stress and the noise-stress immunized groups. These noise-stress-induced changes were significantly prevented by Triphala administration in both the Triphala noise-stress and the Triphala noise-stress immunized groups. Hence our study has divulged that oral administration of Triphala appears to stimulate the neutrophil functions in the immunized rats and stress induced suppression in the neutrophil functions were significantly prevented by Triphala.

Abstract: Lantana (Lantana camara Linn) is a noxious weed that grows in many tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Ingestion of lantana foliage by grazing animals causes cholestasis and hepatotoxicity. Both ruminants and nonruminant animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and female rats are susceptible to the hepatotoxic action of lantana toxins. The hepatotoxins are pentacyclic triterpenoids called lantadenes. Molecular structure of lantadenes has been determined. Green unripe fruits of the plant are toxic to humans. Lantana spp. exert allelopathic action on the neighboring vegetation. The allelochemicals have been identified as phenolics, with umbelliferone, methylcoumarin, and salicylic acid being the most phytotoxic. In addition to phenolics, a recent report indicates lantadene A and B as more potent allelochemicals. Management of lantana toxicosis in animals is achieved by drenching with activated charcoal and supportive therapy. Recent reports on the bilirubin clearance effect of Chinese herbal tea Yin Zhi Huang (decoction of the plant Yin Chin, Artemisia capillaries, and three other herbs) or its active ingredient 6,7-dimethylesculetin, in jaundice are very exciting and warrant investigations on its, possible, ameliorative effects in lantana intoxicated animals. Research is being conducted on new drug discovery based on natural products in different parts of the lantana plant.

Abstract: Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO Nps) were synthesized using Caesalpinia bonducella seed extract via a green synthetic pathway and were evaluated for electrocatalytic properties by carrying out electrochemical detection of riboflavin [vitamin B2 (VB2)]. The seeds of C. bonducella are known to have strong antioxidant properties arising due to the presence of various components, including citrulline, phytosterinin, β-carotene, and flavonoids, which serve as reducing, stabilizing, and capping agents. The synthesized CuO Nps were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetrc analysis-differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy and further used as a modifier for a graphite electrode surface. The modified electrode was electrochemically characterized by cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry, and chronoamperometry techniques and then assessed for electrocatalysis by carrying out the detection of VB2. The electrochemical sensor could be used for nanomolar detection of VB2 with an observed linear range of 3.13-56.3 nM with a limit of detection of 1.04 nM. The electrode showed good stability and reproducibility over a period of 120 days. The CuO Nps were further analyzed for antibacterial effect with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and in both cases, high antibacterial activity was clearly observed. The newly synthesized nanoparticles, thus, proved to be an interesting material for electrochemical and biological studies.

Abstract: The effect of l -carnitine on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status has been studied in blood, liver, and kidney of young and aged rats. In the aged rats, level of lipid peroxidation was considerably high, while the antioxidants superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, vitamin C, and vitamin E reduced glutathione, and total thiols were low. The l -carnitine was administered by i.p. injection (300 mg/kg body weight/day) for 7, 14, and 21 days. Supplementation of aged rats with l -carnitine demonstrated a time-dependent normalization of abnormally elevated lipid peroxides and of subnormal antioxidant status. Carnitine administration to young rats has brought reduction in lipid peroxidation and elevation in glutathione peroxidase activity and ascorbic acid content. From our observations we conclude that as carnitine is very effective in normalizing age-associated alterations, it can be implemented in the aged to minimize age-associated disorders where free radicals are the major cause.
