This work has defined the 13 bp palindrome GGTCACAGTGACC as a minimal functional estrogen responsive element (ERE), which binds estrogen receptor preferentially in vitro and point mutations within the ERE decrease its affinity for the estrogen receptor and result in a complete loss of estrogen inducibility.
Abstract
Sequences located upstream of the transcription initiation site of the Xenopus vitellogenin A2 (vit A2) gene contain a hormone dependent enhancer that confers estrogen control to the heterologous thymidine kinase (tk) promoter. As a minimal functional estrogen responsive element (ERE), we have defined the 13 bp palindrome GGTCACAGTGACC. This ERE binds estrogen receptor preferentially in vitro. Although the ERE shares some structural features with the glucocorticoid responsive element (GRE) it is distinct from this element since it neither binds glucocorticoid receptor in vitro nor does it confer glucocorticoid inducibility to a fusion gene. Point mutations within the ERE decrease its affinity for the estrogen receptor and result in a complete loss of estrogen inducibility.

Estrogen and progesterone receptor-binding sites on the chicken vitellogenin II gene: synergism of steroid hormone action.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated here that two different steroid hormones can be functionally synergistic through the interaction of their corresponding receptors with two different binding sites adjacent to one another.

Endocrine and Paracrine Regulation of Endometrial Angiogenesis

TL;DR: This paper presents data demonstrating that VEGF‐A expression in normal endometrial epithelial and stromal cells and in Ishikawa adenocarcinoma cells is increased by an ovarian steroid, estradiol, and proposes that the regulation ofendometrial angiogenesis is mediated indirectly via complex interactions among cell types.

Response element sequence modulates estrogen receptor alpha and beta affinity and activity.

TL;DR: Notable differences between ERalpha and ERbeta include: both K(d) and transcriptional induction were generally higher for ERalpha than ERbeta, better correlation between ERE palindrome length and transcriptionAL induction for ER Alpha than for ER beta, and a better correlations between (ER-ERE)K(d), transcriptional induction for ER alpha than forERbeta.

Characterization of ligand binding by the human p55 tumour-necrosis-factor receptor. Involvement of individual cysteine-rich repeats.

TL;DR: This study characterize the involvement of the four cysteine-rich repeats of the human p55 TNF receptor in TNF and LT binding by both membrane-bound and soluble forms of the receptor and suggests that the first three repeats are each required for TNFbinding by both the soluble and the cell-surface receptor.

Role of estrogen receptors in the vascular system.

TL;DR: It is suggested that absence of functional ER may represent a novel risk factor for cardiovascular diseases because of the availability of ER alpha and ER beta-deficient mice and access to a patient with ER alpha-deficiency.
