Back-Translation for Cross-Cultural Research

TLDR
The authors investigated factors that affect translation quality and how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated through an analysis of variance design, and concluded that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target translations are studied.
Abstract
Two aspects of translation were investigated: (1) factors that affect translation quality, and (2) how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated. The variables of language, content, and difficulty were studied through an analysis of variance design. Ninety-four bilinguals from the University of Guam, representing ten languages, translated or back-translated six essays incorporating three content areas and two levels of difficulty. The five criteria for equivalence were based on comparisons of meaning or predictions of similar responses to original or translated versions. The factors of content, difficulty, language and content-language interaction were significant, and the five equivalence criteria proved workable. Conclusions are that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target versions are studied.

Cross-cultural variations in probability judgment accuracy: Beyond general knowledge overconfidence?

TL;DR: Results revealed that previously observed cross-cultural variations do indeed generalize, and are consistent with the influences of culture-specific cognitive customs, including responsiveness to explicitly displayed information, regardless of its presumed validity.

Examining attribution model of self-stigma on social support and psychological well-being among people with HIV+/AIDS

TL;DR: Although the linkage between the attributions of control, responsibility, and blame was confirmed, the relationship of blame to self-stigma was not significant and the impact of stigma on psychological adjustment among PWHA was demonstrated.

Studying Ethnic Minority and Economically Disadvantaged Populations: Methodological Challenges and Best Practices

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss strategies for resolving typical problems in sampling, recruitment and retention; address ethical issues associated with researching these populations; examine issues with measurement and the importance of measurement equivalence; describe potential linguistic problems with translated measures and provide solutions to maintain the credibility of scientific inferences based on those measures, and present strategies for adapting previously published preventive interventions for use with ethnic minority and low-income populations.
