TLDR
The authors investigated factors that affect translation quality and how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated through an analysis of variance design, and concluded that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target translations are studied.Abstract:
Two aspects of translation were investigated: (1) factors that affect translation quality, and (2) how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated. The variables of language, content, and difficulty were studied through an analysis of variance design. Ninety-four bilinguals from the University of Guam, representing ten languages, translated or back-translated six essays incorporating three content areas and two levels of difficulty. The five criteria for equivalence were based on comparisons of meaning or predictions of similar responses to original or translated versions. The factors of content, difficulty, language and content-language interaction were significant, and the five equivalence criteria proved workable. Conclusions are that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target versions are studied.read more

The influence of the propensity to trust on mobile users' attitudes toward in-app advertisements
Millissa F.Y. Cheung,Wai Ming To +1 more
TL;DR: A theoretical model that extends the theory of planned behavior to include the propensity to trust and trust as antecedents of mobile users' attitudes toward in-app advertisements indicated that users' propensity totrust affected their trust in in- app advertising, and this in turn affected their attitudes towardIn- app advertisements and their intention to watch in-App advertisements.

Introversion-extraversion and the efl proficiency of japanese students
TL;DR: The authors explored the relationship between the introversion-extraversion tendencies of Japanese students and their proficiency in English as a foreign language (EFL) and found that introverts tended to have higher scores on the reading and grammar components of the standardized English test.

Testing for measurement invariance in the satisfaction with life scale: a comparison of russians and north americans
TL;DR: In this article, the comparability of Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) scores across U.S. and Russian student and community groups was examined, and the costs of failing to meet criteria for weak, strong, and strict measurement invariance were discussed.

Ventilator circuit and secretion management strategies: a Franco-Canadian survey

TL;DR: Based on the use of more frequent ventilator circuit changes, closed suctioning systems, heated humidifiers, and respiratory therapists, ventilATOR circuit and secretion management practice appears more costly in Canada than in France.

Extreme response style in cross‐cultural research
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate extreme response style (ERS) in cross-cultural research and find that ERS varies between cultures and across response formats, and evidence is also found that the acquiescence response style varies among cultures and response formats.
