TLDR
The authors investigated factors that affect translation quality and how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated through an analysis of variance design, and concluded that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target translations are studied.Abstract:
Two aspects of translation were investigated: (1) factors that affect translation quality, and (2) how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated. The variables of language, content, and difficulty were studied through an analysis of variance design. Ninety-four bilinguals from the University of Guam, representing ten languages, translated or back-translated six essays incorporating three content areas and two levels of difficulty. The five criteria for equivalence were based on comparisons of meaning or predictions of similar responses to original or translated versions. The factors of content, difficulty, language and content-language interaction were significant, and the five equivalence criteria proved workable. Conclusions are that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target versions are studied.read more

TL;DR: Analysis of multiple-group structural equation modeling revealed that perceptions of teacher support and parent support, but not peer support, were related indirectly to academic performance through student engagement, and this partial mediation model was invariant across gender.

The acceptance of modern myths about sexual aggression scale: development and validation in German and English
TL;DR: The reliability and validity of parallel German and English versions of the AMMSA scale were examined and show that both language versions are highly reliable; compared with a traditional RMA scale, means ofAMMSA scores are higher and their distributions more closely approximate normality.

Translating Achievement Tests for Use in Cross-National Studies.
TL;DR: The specific purposes of this paper are to address four important problems that arise when translating tests and how these problems might be resolved, to identify and review judgmental and statistical methods for establishing the equivalence of scores from the same test presented in different languages, and to provide some preliminary guidelines for persons doing test translations and equivalence studies.

Targeted Online Advertising: Using Reciprocity Appeals to Increase Acceptance Among Users of Free Web Services
Abstract: The Internet is dominated by free web services that depend on advertising revenues and powerful marketing tools to support their business models. Targeted online advertising enables websites to increase their advertising revenues by selectively displaying advertisements according to users' browsing behavior, sociodemographics, and interests. Yet targeting also creates negative consumer reactions, and websites confront increasing regulatory pressures to inform consumers about their practices. It is critical for such advertising-supported websites to address those challenges proactively. In one scenario experiment and two field studies, the authors show that a normative reciprocity argument is generally more effective than the current industry practice of using a utilitarian argument related to advertising relevance to increase acceptance of targeted online advertising. However, in some cases, this dominance switches depending on specific website characteristics such as website utility and level of user-gen...
