Back-Translation for Cross-Cultural Research

TLDR
The authors investigated factors that affect translation quality and how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated through an analysis of variance design, and concluded that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target translations are studied.
Abstract
Two aspects of translation were investigated: (1) factors that affect translation quality, and (2) how equivalence between source and target versions can be evaluated. The variables of language, content, and difficulty were studied through an analysis of variance design. Ninety-four bilinguals from the University of Guam, representing ten languages, translated or back-translated six essays incorporating three content areas and two levels of difficulty. The five criteria for equivalence were based on comparisons of meaning or predictions of similar responses to original or translated versions. The factors of content, difficulty, language and content-language interaction were significant, and the five equivalence criteria proved workable. Conclusions are that translation quality can be predicted, and that a functionally equivalent translation can be demonstrated when responses to the original and target versions are studied.

Profiling European traditional food consumers

TL;DR: The profile of European traditional food consumers in terms of their socio-demographics, attitudes, life-style orientations and behavioural characteristics was studied in this paper. But the authors focused on the characteristics of traditional food consumption patterns in the south than in the north of Europe and found that TFC across Europe are typically middle-aged to elderly, healthconscious, health-conscious, ethnocentric, food conn

Service Employees’ Reactions to Mistreatment by Customers: A Comparison Between North America and East Asia

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed that customer service employees' reactions to mistreatment by customers can vary between North American and East Asian employees due to differences in their cultural values, and they found that customer mistreatment was associated with direct, active, and target-specific reactions (i.e., sabotage directed toward the source of mistreatment).

Online learning usage within Yemeni higher education: The role of compatibility and task-technology fit as mediating variables in the IS success model

TL;DR: The roles of task-technology-fit (TTF) and compatibility as mediating variables have not been investigated through Delone and Mclean's model of IS success, and overall quality appreciably influences compatibility.
