Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

TLDR
This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.
Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Binary-Input Ternary-Output Turbo Codes for Ternary PSK Transmission

TL;DR: This work introduces a phase shifting approach for TPSK in order to effectively reduce the PAPR in the framework of OFDM with DFT-precoding, and proposes a design of binary-input ternary-output (BITO) turbo codes that match with TPSk signaling.

Performance analysis of the bit-interleaved coded modulation using turbo equalization with single carrier frequency domain equalization using subblock signal processing over fast fading channels

TL;DR: An analytical model where the product of the Doppler spread and transmit block length and the number of subblocks signal processing are crucial parameters affecting the transfer function of the equalizer and hence the convergence behavior of the TE-SC-FDE with subblock signal processing.

M.J. Hart, +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a computationally efficient solution that performs equalisation and despreading using frequency domain processing, enabling the same equaliser to be used for both OFDM and W-CDMA.

Performance Improvement by Frequency-Domain Interleaving for OFDM/TDM Using MMSE-FDE in a Wireless Channel

TL;DR: It is shown that frequency-domain interleaving on a frame-by-frame basis for OFDM/TDM using MMSE-FDE achieves improved BER performance in comparison with conventional OFDM due to enhanced frequency diversity gain.
