Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

TLDR
This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.
Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Asymptotically Optimal Low-Complexity SC-FDE With Noise Prediction in Data-Like Improper-Complex Interference

TL;DR: It is shown that this MIMO SC frequency-domain equalizer with noise prediction is asymptotically optimal in the sense that the average mean-squared error converges to that of the MMSE-optimal equalizer as the block length tends to infinity.

Frequency-Domain Transmit Processing for MIMO SC-FDMA in Wideband Propagation Channels

TL;DR: Results reported in this paper show that ZF pre- equalization for SISO SC-FDMA is capable of achieving the Shannon Capacity limit for faded channels, with a BER performance that is identical to an AWGN channel, and that pre-equalized increases the capacity of MIMO SC- FDMA systems.

BER Performance of Joint THP/pre-FDE

TL;DR: Joint THP/pre-FDE is proposed that requires the channel state information (CSI) at both the transmitter and receiver and provides almost the same BER performance as joint ThP/FDE.

On the Use of Multiple Grossly Nonlinear Amplifiers for an Efficient Amplification of OQAM Signals with FDE Receivers

TL;DR: It is shown that for some 16-QOQAM signals it is possible to employ two grossly nonlinear amplifiers to perform an amplification that is formally equivalent to a linear amplification.

Generalized OFDM with Frequency-domain Equalization

TL;DR: A novel approach to alleviate the PAPR problem of OFDM is proposed and a generalized OFDM (GOFDM) with frequency-domain equalization is presented and its performance in a frequency-selective fading channel is evaluated and compared with those of conventional OFDM and single carrier (SC) systems.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
