Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

TLDR
This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.
Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Linear Precoding of OFDMA Signals to Minimize Their Instantaneous Power Variance

TL;DR: There is an optimum linear block precoding, but its advantage over DFT precoding (such as that used for the uplink signaling in the 3GPP-LTE standard) is rather small.

Hardware Impairments in Millimeter Wave Communications using OFDM and SC-FDE

TL;DR: It is shown that SC-FDE is much more robust against impairments from non-linear power amplifiers, IQ imbalance and ADC resolution than OFDM for a typical mmWave system configuration.

Radio communication method and device in single-carrier transmission system

TL;DR: In this article, a radio communication device for receiving a single-carrier signal transmitted in a partial spectrum of Nyquist frequency band, includes an interference eliminator for eliminating interference from a received signal by spectrum reproduction of non-transmitted spectra using a symbol replica, to output an interference eliminated signal, wherein the interference includes intersymbol interference which is caused by symbols which are more than a predetermined distance away from a decision symbol point.

Iterative Frequency Domain Equalization for MIMO-GFDM Systems

TL;DR: A new iterative frequency domain equalization (FDE) algorithm is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) systems capable of enhancing the system fidelity by considering the complete frequency-domain second order description of the received signal.

A hybrid single-carrier/multicarrier transmission scheme with power allocation

TL;DR: The results show the advantage of the CP-SC-MMSE scheme for flat and mild selective channels due to their low PAPR and that theCP-MC scheme is more advantageous for a narrow range of channels with severe selectivity.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
