This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.Abstract:
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.read more

A transmit MIMO scheme with frequency domain pre-equalization for wireless frequency selective channels
Lai-U Choi,Ross D. Murch +1 more
TL;DR: This paper introduces a transmit multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scheme with frequency domain pre-equalization for a multipath or frequency selective channel and demonstrates the improved performance of the proposed scheme compared to other transmit MIMO schemes.

Intercarrier Interference Immune Single Carrier OFDM via Magnitude-Keyed Modulation for High Speed Aerial Vehicle Communication
TL;DR: The proposed Magnitude-Keyed Modulation (MKM) modulation provides SC-OFDM system immunity to ICI and with an easy implementation it significantly outperforms OFDM, SC- OFDM and MC-CDMA systems with Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulation and Quadrature Amplitude Modulations (QAM) in severe ICI environment.

Outage probability and diversity order of linear equalizers in frequency-selective fading channels
TL;DR: It is proved that, regardless of the channel memory, the diversity order of zero-forcing equalizer is one, and it is observed that the minimum mean square equalizer has a varying diversity order depending on the spectral efficiency.

Iterative Receivers Based on Subblock Processing for Phase Noise Compensation in OFDM Systems
TL;DR: An iterative algorithm employing decision feedback provided by either an equalizer or a channel decoder in order to compensate for the phase noise resulting from imperfect oscillators in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems achieves performance close to that of an OFDM system without phase noise over a wide range of conditions.

The advantages of a known sequence versus cyclic prefix in a SC/FDE system
TL;DR: This work investigates the advantages of a known symbol sequence - a so-called unique word (UW) - instead of the well-known cyclic prefix (as is used in OFDM systems) for a single carrier system with frequency domain equalization (SC/FDE).

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise
TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
