Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

TLDR
This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.
Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Channel Estimation for Frequency-Domain Equalization of Single-Carrier Broadband Wireless Communications

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employ an interpolation method to propose new algorithms for frequency-domain channel estimation for both slow and fast time-varying fading channels, and show that least squares (LS)-based channel estimation and minimum mean square (MMSE)-based CSI with interpolations are equivalent under certain conditions.

OFDM transceiver structure with time-domain scrambling

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method and transceiver for wireless multicarrier communications, where conventional OFDM symbols, after inverse fast Fourier transform, are scrambled in time domain and then inserted, up-converted at the carrier frequency for transmission.

Design and Implementation of a Scalable Channel Emulator for Wideband MIMO Systems

TL;DR: It is shown that for single-input-single-output (SISO) systems, FIR-based emulators are computationally efficient but that the complexity rapidly becomes impractical for larger array sizes, and frequency-domain approaches exhibit a fixed initial complexity cost that grows at a reduced rate as a function of the array size.

Pilot signal in an FDMA communication system

TL;DR: In this paper, an M-point parallel transform sequence that is a discrete Fourier transform of a CAZAC sequence is distributed among a set of M sub-carriers among N subcarriers to form an N-point frequency-domain sequence.

Iterative cyclic prefix reconstruction for coded single-carrier systems with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE)

TL;DR: Two novel schemes for reconstructing the cycle prefix for coded single-carrier frequency-domain equalization systems that employ insufficient length of cycle prefix at the transmitter are discussed and the performance of these schemes is shown by computer simulations.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
