Frequency domain equalization for single-carrier broadband wireless systems

TLDR
This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.
Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

A novel frequency domain equalization method for single-carrier wireless transmissions over doubly-selective fading channels

TL;DR: A novel iterative frequency domain equalization method which relies on a sliding-window-based MMSE widely-linear filter with inter-carrier interference cancellation, and iterated time-domain soft-decisions that outperforms the high-complexity linear block MMSE equalizer and other iterative approaches of similar complexity.

Frequency domain channel estimation in a single carrier frequency division multiple access system

TL;DR: In this article, a channel estimator for a receiver node receiving signals from a plurality of user terminals is presented, where each user terminal is allotted a respective set of transmission subcarriers and respective test signal sequences for transmission over the channel to be estimated.

Widely linear MMSE precoding and equalization techniques for SC-FDE systems

TL;DR: Simulation results show that together with the error performance gain, these SC-FDE systems have lower sensibility to the feedback filter length in systems using decision-feedback equalizers, and in Tomlinson-Harashima precoded systems, the performance gain is observed even with channel estimation/channel state information errors.

Efficient design of block adaptive equalization and diversity combining for space-time block-coded single-carrier systems

TL;DR: A weighted space-time block-coding (STBC)-like matrix-wise block adaptive frequency-domain equalization (WSB-FDE) is proposed for the cyclic-prefixed STBC single-carrier systems equipped with a diversity combining.

Blind Channel Identification for MIMO Single Carrier Zero Padding Block Transmission Systems

TL;DR: The design of the precoding sequence which minimizes the noise effect in covariance matrix estimation is proposed and the effect of the optimal precode sequence on channel equalization is discussed.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
