The first observation of stochastic resonance in an optical device, the bidirectional ring laser, is reported and the addition of injected noise can lead to an improved signal-to-noise ratio.
Abstract
We report the first observation of stochastic resonance in an optical device, the bidirectional ring laser. The experiment exploits a new technique to modulate periodically the asymmetry between the two counter-rotating lasing modes. The measurements verify that the addition of injected noise can lead to an improved signal-to-noise ratio (relative to that observed with no externally injected noise).

Adaptive stochastic resonance for noisy threshold neurons based on mutual information

TL;DR: Evidence is presented that many types of noisy threshold neurons exhibit the SR effect in terms of the mutual information between random input and output sequences and a new statistically robust learning law can find this entropy-optimal noise level.

Noise effect in a sine-Gordon lattice

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of internal noise in a sine-Gordon chain exhibiting the well known nonlinear supratransmission phenomenon was studied and it was shown that spatiotemporal noise can trigger breather modes with a given probability in a range of parameters where they do not occur without noise.

Generalized stochastic resonance for a fractional harmonic oscillator with bias-signal-modulated trichotomous noise

TL;DR: For a fractional linear oscillator subjected to both parametric excitation of trichotomous noise and external excitation by bias-signal-modulated trichotomyous noise, the generalized stochastic resonance (GSR) phenomena are investigated in this paper in case the noises are cross-correlative.

Optimal quantization and suprathreshold stochastic resonance

TL;DR: This work analyzes the rate-distortion performance of SSR for a range of input SNR's and finds that for sufficiently small input SNRs, the optimal quantizer is one in which all thresholds are identical, that is, the SSR situation is optimal in this case.

Onset of resonance in chaotically driven systems

TL;DR: This analysis reveals the existence and identification of a characteristic natural frequency associated with the dynamics of the system confirming that classical resonance is responsible for chaotic resonance behavior.
