The first observation of stochastic resonance in an optical device, the bidirectional ring laser, is reported and the addition of injected noise can lead to an improved signal-to-noise ratio.
Abstract
We report the first observation of stochastic resonance in an optical device, the bidirectional ring laser. The experiment exploits a new technique to modulate periodically the asymmetry between the two counter-rotating lasing modes. The measurements verify that the addition of injected noise can lead to an improved signal-to-noise ratio (relative to that observed with no externally injected noise).

The interplay between diversity and noise in an excitable cell network model

TL;DR: In this paper , the effects of the interplay between diversity and noise in a 3D network of FitzHugh-Nagumo elements, with topology and dimensions chosen to model a pancreatic β-cell cluster, as an example of an excitable cell network, were studied.

Emergence of resonances in neural systems: the interplay between threshold adaptation and short-term synaptic plasticity

TL;DR: It is found that there are two possible noise levels which optimize signal transmission, in contrast with the classical theory of stochastic resonance which is able to predict only one optimal level of noise.

Stochastic Resonance of a Confined Flexible Polymer

TL;DR: In this paper , the dynamics of a flexible polymer confined in two connected rectangular cavities with a small structureless hole in between subject to an oscillatory force was studied via overdamped Brownian dynamics simulations.

Comment on the ergodic properties of the periodically forced Fokker-Planck equation

TL;DR: In this paper, the periodically forced Fokker-Planck equation of a one-variable system in a bistable potential is solved perturbatively, and it is shown that the solution tends to a unique asymptotic distribution, whose parametric dependence on the diffusion coefficient as well as on the strength and phase of the forcing are explicitly exhibited.

Signal Processing and Control in Nonlinear Nanomechanical Systems

TL;DR: In this paper, the use of stochastic resonance as a means of coherent signal amplification for use in nanomechanical devices is discussed. But the authors do not consider the effect of nonlinearity on the quantum properties of the nanoscale systems.
