TLDR
It is shown that introspective ability is correlated with gray matter volume in the anterior prefrontal cortex, a region that shows marked evolutionary development in humans, and this findings point to a focal neuroanatomical substrate for introspection ability, a substrate distinct from that supporting primary perception.

Distinct brain mechanisms for conscious versus subliminal error detection

TL;DR: This work proposes the existence of two distinct brain mechanisms for metacognitive judgements: a conscious all-or-none process of single-trial response evaluation, and a non-conscious statistical assessment of confidence.
Journal ArticleDOI

Undirected thought: neural determinants and correlates.

TL;DR: This article reviews the current status of the field and examines the research on the three most frequently discussed categories of undirected thought: spontaneous thought, stimulus-independent thought, and mind wandering and presents novel findings regarding the functional connectivity between large-scale brain networks during mind wandering.
Journal ArticleDOI

Orbitofrontal Cortex Is Required for Optimal Waiting Based on Decision Confidence

TL;DR: A postdecision temporal wagering task in which rats expressed choice confidence by the amount of time they were willing to wait for reward established an anatomical locus for a metacognitive report, confidence judgment, distinct from the processes required for perceptual decisions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Psychiatric symptom dimensions are associated with dissociable shifts in metacognition but not task performance

TL;DR: This study bridges a gap between an emerging neuroscience of decision making and an understanding of metacognitive alterations in psychopathology, indicating a specific and pervasive link between metacognition and mental health.
Journal ArticleDOI

Domain-General and Domain-Specific Patterns of Activity Supporting Metacognition in Human Prefrontal Cortex

TL;DR: Using multivariate decoding methods, this work provides evidence that perceptual- and memory-specific metacognitive representations coexist with generic confidence signals and reconcile previously conflicting results on the domain specificity/generality of metacognition.

Voxel-Based Morphometry—The Methods

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the steps involved in VBM, with particular emphasis on segmenting gray matter from MR images with non-uniformity artifact and provide evaluations of the assumptions that underpin the method, including the accuracy of the segmentation and the assumptions made about the statistical distribution of the data.
Journal ArticleDOI

A fast diffeomorphic image registration algorithm

TL;DR: DARTEL has been applied to intersubject registration of 471 whole brain images, and the resulting deformations were evaluated in terms of how well they encode the shape information necessary to separate male and female subjects and to predict the ages of the subjects.

Transformed Up‐Down Methods in Psychoacoustics

TL;DR: A broad class of up‐down methods used in psychoacoustics with due emphasis on the related problems of parameter estimation and the efficient placing of observations is described, including examples where conventional techniques are inapplicable.
