TL;DR: In this paper, a number of bipolar compounds containing a benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole core and peripheral diarylamines and/or 4-tert-butylphenyl moieties have been synthesized via palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of 4,7-dibromobenzo[ 1, 2, 5]thiamine with appropriate stannyl compounds.
Abstract: Bipolar compounds (referred to in general as btza) containing a benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole core and peripheral diarylamines and/or 4-tert-butylphenyl moieties have been synthesized via palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of 4,7-dibromobenzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole with appropriate stannyl compounds. These compounds are fluorescent and the emission color ranges from green to red. The fluorescence of the compounds originates from a charge-transfer process and exhibits solvatochromism. These red-light-emitting materials are amorphous and devices of different configurations were fabricated: I) ITO/btza/TPBI/Mg:Ag; II) ITO/btza/Alq3/Mg:Ag; III) ITO/btza/Mg:Ag (where ITO = indium tin oxide, TPBI = 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbezimidazol-2-yl)benzene, and Alq3 = tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum). The performance of some of the red-light-emitting devices appears to be very promising.

TL;DR: This review focuses on the roles of NRT1 and NRT2 in nitrate uptake and nitrate allocation among different tissues; the functions of the transceptor N RT1.1, transcription factors, and small signaling peptides in nitrates signaling and tissue communication are described; and the new strategies for improving nitrogen-use efficiency are compiled.
Abstract: Nitrogen accounts for approximately 60% of the fertilizer consumed each year; thus, it represents one of the major input costs for most nonlegume crops. Nitrate is one of the two major forms of nitrogen that plants acquire from the soil. Mechanistic insights into nitrate transport and signaling have enabled new strategies for enhancing nitrogen utilization efficiency, for lowering input costs for farming, and, more importantly, for alleviating environmental impacts (e.g., eutrophication and production of the greenhouse gas N2O). Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in understanding how nitrate is acquired from the surroundings, how it is efficiently distributed into different plant tissues in response to environmental changes, how nitrate signaling is perceived and transmitted, and how shoot and root nitrogen status is communicated. Several key components of these processes have proven to be novel tools for enhancing nitrate- and nitrogen-use efficiency. In this review, we focus on the...

TL;DR: The second critical assessment of functional annotation (CAFA), a timed challenge to assess computational methods that automatically assign protein function, was conducted by as mentioned in this paper. But the results of the CAFA2 assessment are limited.
Abstract: BACKGROUND: A major bottleneck in our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of life is the assignment of function to proteins. While molecular experiments provide the most reliable annotation of proteins, their relatively low throughput and restricted purview have led to an increasing role for computational function prediction. However, assessing methods for protein function prediction and tracking progress in the field remain challenging. RESULTS: We conducted the second critical assessment of functional annotation (CAFA), a timed challenge to assess computational methods that automatically assign protein function. We evaluated 126 methods from 56 research groups for their ability to predict biological functions using Gene Ontology and gene-disease associations using Human Phenotype Ontology on a set of 3681 proteins from 18 species. CAFA2 featured expanded analysis compared with CAFA1, with regards to data set size, variety, and assessment metrics. To review progress in the field, the analysis compared the best methods from CAFA1 to those of CAFA2. CONCLUSIONS: The top-performing methods in CAFA2 outperformed those from CAFA1. This increased accuracy can be attributed to a combination of the growing number of experimental annotations and improved methods for function prediction. The assessment also revealed that the definition of top-performing algorithms is ontology specific, that different performance metrics can be used to probe the nature of accurate predictions, and the relative diversity of predictions in the biological process and human phenotype ontologies. While there was methodological improvement between CAFA1 and CAFA2, the interpretation of results and usefulness of individual methods remain context-dependent.

TL;DR: Polar wander paths for the North and South China blocks suggest that both were parts of Gondwana in the Palaeozoic, and the North China block accreted to Siberia in the late Permian.
Abstract: Polar wander paths for the North and South China blocks suggest that (1) both were parts of Gondwana in the Palaeozoic, (2) the North China block accreted to Siberia in the late Permian and (3) the South China block accreted to the North China block in the middle Triassic to the early Jurassic. Comparison of the polar wander path for the South China block with that for northern Eurasia suggests that relative motion of over 4,000 km has occurred between them.

TL;DR: Although the authors know few of the details, the processes of synthesis and secretion of wall components are broadly outlined and it is conceivable that the addition of noncellulosic components to an existing wall is entirely by self-assembly, with each component designed to fit individually with others.
